Slow Sunday Stitching Silence

How about a little peace and quiet to go with your slow stitching today?!? They say that "silence is golden", but most people avoid it like the plague. Television, noise, and social media is a constant companion for a lot of people.
 Life Is Beautiful Block #3
I was surprised to find that my tolerance for silence was a lot lower than I thought, when I recently attended a silent meditation and mindfulness retreat. It sounded like a good idea at the time, but the reality of it was challenging! The first night was okay, but the second day was really really hard for me. I longed for conversation, for music, and for the boost of energy that sound can give.

I recently read a blog post by Joshua Becker that reminded me of the benefits of silence that I was seeking ...the most underrated sound in our society. I learned that I do need silence, but can only tolerate it in smaller doses than a whole weekend!

So as I hand stitch today, I will be treating myself to some peace and quiet, while I work on block #4 of my Life is Beautiful project.
I had a little trouble with the heat transfer on my latest block. The ink transferred onto my ironing board cover right through the muslin. I don't know if I pressed too hard, or had the heat too high? Oh well, as you can see the cover is dirty and needs to be replaced anyway.
Next time I will be more careful.

I am enjoying the feather stitching on this pear design and hope to finish the block today.
Why not treat yourself to some silence while you enjoy some relaxing hand stitching? Link up your blog post below and share your progress with us:

I often sew in silence. No radio. No music. I need quiet time to recharge. I don't think I would want a whole weekend of silence though! How big are your circles? They are coming along nicely. Have a wonderful stitchy day.

And then just trying to silence the MIND, lol...very hard!

Wow -- pressed right thru to the ironing board? That's wild -- I've never had that happen before! Your pattern is sweet -- I love pears in stitcheries. I don't know why, but just one of those things to which I'm drawn. Believe it or not, the one place I love -- I *embrace* silence is when I'm driving and along. I rarely turn on the radio, preferring to use the time to just think, meditate and pray! :)

I suspect I couldn't keep quiet for a whole weekend if I tried, but an hour here or there is good. Your stitching is so beautiful, neat and even.

quite often daytimes I have no tv, no music - nothing on while doing housework and wandering the house doing things - but yet when I sit down to sew the tv comes on, music, netflix - something - don't know why but I get more sewing done if I am listening to something.

Oh as my husband and I are musicians we cherish silence. We mute all ads on tv and love to just sit side by side and do our projects in silence. It is so relaxing and refreshing. After DH plays a gig (with the trombones right behind him!) he comes home to sit in the dark silence and refresh himself. It sounds strange, but we are so trained to "actively listen" that we NEED to have quiet.
What is it they say--the "best things in life are free"...have a great Sunday in Silence....hugs, Julierose

When I turned everything off last night for Earth Hour, I really appreciated the calm, quiet night and realized I need more contemplative quiet in my life. It was nice to wake up to your post and lovely reminder of that.

I've never attempted a whole weekend of silence but would like to try it sometime. Even a 1/2 hour sit (meditation term)...I suspect a whole weekend of silence would be hard for most of us surrounded by noise as we are. I am enjoying some silence right now so I guess I should shut the computer down. Thanks for sharing your slowing down thoughts and the stitching process. Very nice feather stitching.

You blog today on silence got me thinking. I like a little bit of noise around me and tend to work better with the radio on, unless I'm reading and then it has to be silence! I guess we all need a bit of both!

Lovely stitching as usual! I have a hard time with silence mostly due to really bad tinnitus in both ears. Sound covers it up a bit!
A used ironing board cover is the sign of a busy quilter!

I think I would go a little crazy without some sort of background noise--just a habit, I guess. I love the pear!

I think we all need people and social interaction... but I also know that I need a little bit of peace and quiet each to regroup the nerves after a tightly scheduled day... quiet meaning, the sound of a trickling brook, breeze through the trees or the songs of birds... there's always "time for rock and roll when I like it"!!!! lol! ;-)

Sometimes on a sunny day I like to stitch in silence with only the sound of the clock ticking! So serene! Not sure I would like for too long though.

I often find having background noise (TV. Radio) quite irritating actually....when I am creating I LOVE the silence. Finally linked up here...been meaning to do it for quite some ime now.....love seeing what everyone has on their needle

I love silence Kathy! But I suspect it would grow old for me too if I had no choice. I often go days at a time and don't turn on the TV. I love to quilt in silence - I find that I make fewer mistakes that way :) However, sometimes I put an audio book on my ipad and listen along to that, especially if I'm running behind on finishing up my book club for that month!

I cherish silence and love it while sewing or gardening. My husband always wants a radio or TV playing...even takes it outside to the garden. I've had embroidery transfers bleed through to the ironing board cover too.

To tell you the truth, I don't remember how I got to your blog earlier. Through some other blog, I do know that.

I feel it is not a coincidence either. I love hand embroidery, using beads, ribbons, etc. Slow stitching appeals to me greatly. I've never made a quilt in my life though.

Reading about stitching in silence and following the link to Becoming Minimalist was just what I needed for inspiration at this time in my life and I thank you.

Since losing my dear husband in Dec. 2012, I have 'added' more noise to my life, to help fill the 'void' that his going left. We were teen sweethearts, dated for three years, then married for 43 years. I miss him terribly. The 'silence' right after he left was 'deafening'.

I don't watch TV, but I do watch movies and programs on my computer. Lately, I've been feeling the need to 'cut back' and to just 'be'.

My husband said a few years back that he enjoyed hearing me humming in here, in my little space, to soothing music as I did my embroidering. He could tell I was happy and that made him happy.

Thank you for this post. I love your header picture and look forward to going through your archives.

I enjoy a morning or afternoon of quiet stitching or housework, but I don't think there is any way I could be quiet for a whole weekend! : )

I've found that I can concentrate better if there is a little noise in the background. Sometimes silence is deafening.
