RBD Challenge Blocks

Riley Blake challenge blocks are on the design wall today. There have been 11 blocks posted, but I have only made 6 so far. That's okay... it's not a race! You can see that I accidentally made one block twice - oopsie! I won't put them side by side in the quilt, but it makes me giggle every time I remember that I did this!

The pink block is the most recently sewn. It is block #6 called Scrappy Churn Dash by Sandy Gervais. I only have a small bit left of that sweet print in the middle. I bought a FQ for the backing and binding for My Easter Dress miniature quilt and have wished I had purchased more of it ever since. Coveting is a fabric lovers downfall!

March Table Scraps and Riley Blake Update

Last month's placemat in the RSC colour of yellow is completely made of scraps from my Blockheads II quilt. I pulled some triangles out of the box and sewed them together. There were some adorable little HST blocks that couldn't find a spot to land so they were voted off. And there was a cute little yellow star for the centre.

The quilting was all straight lines with the walking foot. It is minimally quilted and was boring to do, but it fit the project.

One more placemat to add to this year's collection.

I am a bit behind in sewing the Riley Blake Challenge since I'm only making 2 blocks a month in the RSC colour of the month (and the patterns are being releasing faster than that).

A funny thing happened this week. My goal was to finish the 2 yellow sampler blocks for March. I forgot that I had skipped block #3, and having sewn 4 blocks, I thought I should make block #5 next. And so I did.

Block #5 is called Sundial by Christopher Thompson. When I put it on the design wall, I realized that I had already sewn this block pattern in teal!

When I was sewing the block it did not feel familiar at all, even though I had already sewn it! It does look different with the value placement, doesn't it? I didn't realize what I had done until I took this photo. Anyway, this sampler quilt will not have block #3 (which was a leaf) and will have two of block #5!

I have one more block to finish up yellow month and next up is pink!

Scrappy Saturday RBD

I am sewing the Riley Blake block challenges in the RSC colour of the month. February is aqua/teal, so I dug into the scrap box to make the next blocks.

This 10" tulip block designed by Jill Finley has 56 pieces! Blog readers are probably tired of hearing me swoon about my Alphabitties that I received in the Christmas Jolly Box and use them regularly now for sewing complex blocks.

This cutting and sewing was done on a dark winter evening. It's not a good idea to cut fabric late at night because you're tired and less careful. And do you know what happens then?

Yes... you cut yourself with the rotary cutter! We've all been there!

I put on a sewing machine bandage and continued to sew into the night... slowly!

I finally quit for the night when I got all the subunits sewn. It was like a tiny fabric jigsaw puzzle which is my favourite kind of thing to sew.

The Sundial block by Christopher Thompson is the next pattern released, and it was a very easy block to sew. No injuries occurred :)

Another project?!?!

Yes. I have been enticed to start the Riley Blake 2022 block challenge. I swear I wasn't going to, but the blocks have been too fun to not make them!
Why, you ask? Well, the more small pieces there are in a block, the more I like it!

Each Tuesday one 10" block pattern is posted and there will be a total of 16 blocks. Each block pattern comes from a different designer, some of whom I recognize and some I don't.

Here is block #1
Daisy Chain designed by Lori Holt with 39 pieces.

Here is block #2 Sweetheart designed by Beverly McCullough with 42 pieces. I adore this one!

I don't have a plan for these blocks and am just making the blocks from whatever is on my cutting table. And because I am a long time member of the rainbow scrap challenge, I am surrounded by red scraps this month. These blocks might be turned into placemats, or might become a sampler quilt. I'm waiting for some inspiration to make make that decision.

A few leader-ender fish blocks are being made too!
