One of the mysteries I started on New Year's day is the Merry Mayhem mystery (which has already been removed from the website). I have tried a few different block layouts to see what I like.
I like this one, but I would like it more with a scrappy version where the pieces are all scrambled.
There are so many options with this block... but this one is my favourite. I made enough blocks for a lap quilt, but I want to make it larger, so this week I will make more neutral and navy blocks and add a couple more rows.
It seems like an easy block to sew, but there are so many ways to make it wrong. I made 2 mistakes with this block - a cutting error on the right and a sewing error on the left!

I think the 3 setting too. Those blocks are somewhat tricky to piece, happy stitching!
Love the scrappiness of this quilt and your layout ideas!
Love the blues and the different layouts.
Thanks for sharing the options you're considering. I like the staggered layout with different halves (to mix up the neutral background). I also like your new header photo with the empty spools!
Such a fun block to work with. Love seeing all of the different layouts. Have a great day and happy quilting.
Love the last layout! I have made this block before and yes it's very easy to get it wrong! LOL
I've done the first 2 layout versions with this block, but that 3rd version is awesome. Why do I never think of switching up the layouts like this. Great idea!!
I love your setting. And, the mixture of blues with the creams. I saved the directions but haven't proceeded to do much else. But the idea of a blue and cream/beige and your layout really speaks to me. (Esp. since I won a bunch of beige/ cream fat quarters last fall.) On the other hand I need to focus on my current tops and quilts! Enjoy enlarging your top.
The last arrangement is awesome, almost “around the mountain”. Two color quilts are always striking. Cannot wait to see the next round! Dotti in CT
The last layout is awesome! It is the kind of block for which you need your seam ripper close by. Good luck. ;^)
This is a great block. I have used it many times.
I love the layout you chose...looks like reflections on water! Missed slow stitching Sunday...I must blog more often!!Guess that is my new years resolution.
Love it! My first one was all in blues from Bonnie Hunter's pattern!
I like your second layout; the one she suggested, though they're all nice. I look forward to seeing your final decision. I downloaded the quilt too and I may make it for my RSC. I think it would be pretty in a rainbow.
That third layout makes me think of a firework, welcoming in the new year. And of course you started more than one mystery on New Year's Day!! ;)
I, too, like what you have done here. Thank you for a grreat idea for a layout.
