UFO Progress

My February UFO goal was to finish one of my mystery quilts.

The first step was to find or piece a backing. I had a black wide backing in the closet which was perfect for this job. When I washed it, I tossed in a "Color Catcher" sheet and look how much excess dye it picked up! The white square is how the Color Catcher looked before washing, and the grey is how it looked after being washed with the backing. If I wouldn't have prewashed, the excess dye would be absorbed by the fabrics on the front of the quilt. Love this product!

Here is the backing, batting and quilt top ready to go.

I'm blaming the fact that February is such a short month for the reason that this quilt will not be finished this month.

Oh well, there is always next month, and progress has been made so it's all good!

This month flew by, didn't it? I love the color catchers too. I give them as a gift when I gift a quilt also.

Good thing you used that colour catcher! Looking forward to seeing how you quilt this one. February flew by for me too!

With that amount of dye run, I think I would have put the fabric through again with another color catcher. I once used a dark blue extra-wide batik backing without testing it and boy was I sorry. Even after soaking it twice, it still ran, so I ultimately didn't use it.
And yes, February certainly did seem to fly by uickly.

I've got a different reason for February rushing by and hardly any stitching getting done, we've been away for a three week holiday! So I'm looking forward to spending some time with my sewing machine very soon.

I had a kids quilt not too long ago with white background (really? for a kid??), an old red print on the back, and black sashing around the blocks (I sure wasn't thinking!!). When it came out of the washer the black was not the problem, but it was 2 washes with multiple color washers before the old red stopped bleeding. Only one small white block turned pink and no one but me knew its' history. I love color washers and use them often now!

I love the star design and the look of the colorful star with the black and white fabrics. It will be a fun quilt for the recipient. Thanks for sharing your Color Catcher experience. I highly recommend them to everyone. They work well with any new dark clothing, as well as fabric and quilts. I add them to the finished quilt as well, just to catch any remaining bleeds. I can't wait to see the finish.

I'm definitely going to have to look for dye catcher sheets. I didn't know they existed; thanks for sharing.

It has been a fast month. You made good progress on the UFO, so that counts. Are you leaving it on the list to finish in March?
