Mid Month UFO Report

Well, the month is more than half over, and I have not accomplished much on my December UFO. My goal is to finish my Civil War Sampler quilt before the end of the year, and still it is just a pile of blocks! However, I did purchase a wonderful border fabric which is on the left of the photo, and I am going to run that strong vertical print all around the outside.
am thinking about layout options. Does this quilt want sashing? Cornerstones? Vertical rows of blocks? I haven't made a decision yet, so I can't start to sew.
But I am doubly motivated to finish this quilt because Barbara Brackman is indeed starting another sampler project next year called Threads of Memory about the underground railroad. Of course I will start that project, and it will only be one block a month which is more manageable than a block a week.
I have almost two weeks left in the year to finish this Civil War quilt.
I'm sure I can do it.
Christmas, I'm not so sure about!!

The border fabric you selected looks like it was meant to be. A very good choice. All I did was save block patterns so you are way ahead of me.

You are a very bad influence! I just signed up for the e-mail notifications on the new sampler. Thanks Kathy for putting the link up there. Does this mean I need to finish this years at some point?
Good luck getting your quilt to a top stage in 2 weeks.

14 blocks. That is hard to plan a layout for. How about diagonal settings, alternating 3 and 2 rows for a total of 13 blocks? Or for a straight set you could do a brick effect with the alternate rows set of by half a block. Again, it would use 13 blocks and the last could go on the back for a label.
I think sashing strips are a must with a sampler quilt to give the blocks a bit of room. I like the light fabric with the dark cornerstones and the border fabric if PERFECT!
Whatever you decide, good luck getting it done this year so you can start fresh with a new project next year.

I think it needs sashes and cornerstones. The light fabric that you have under the squares on the left looks good. The blocks kinda float in it, and each give their own statement. And I agree with the rest, the border fabric is right on.

I also like the border print you have chosen, it will compliment your squares. You should have sashing around your blocks, it enhances them. Looking forward to seeing the finished quilt, it will be very lovely.

The border fabric really highlights those blocks.

Love your quilt Kathy. Have you thought of putting it on point? And whichever layout you decide on, I think sashing and corner stones will set it off. That border print was absolutely made for the quilt you are doing. Great choice.

Love these blocks ... with sashing ... with or without cornerstones.
