Auditioning Sashing

Since light green is the Rainbow Scrap Challenge colour for October, I started playing with some leftover green HST blocks. I don't remember what these pieces originally belonged to, but they jumped out of the box and wanted to become little QST blocks.
How do I know this?
Because they told me of course!

I started sewing them together and when it was time to trim them all to the same size, the blocks measured 1 3/8" unfinished and will finish at 1 1/8". So little and sweet!

As I began to sew together the QST blocks, they started lining up into columns with similar friends.

This is not what I thought I was making, but these blocks are bossy and I was just along for the ride.

Today I am auditioning sashing fabrics and trying to make it big enough for a placemat.

Here are two options... the light green sashing on the right (maybe too light?) and the crackle batik on the left.

What do you think about these choices? A medium green on the right (maybe too dark?) and the same fabric as the block spacers on the left. I like this one but it's a stripe and there's not much left so I can't control those long dark lines, but maybe that's okay too?

How about this one? On the right side is a light spotty one (maybe too olivey?) and on the left is the crackle batik again, with a possible border and/or binding choice.

The more fabrics I audition, the more confused I get. Please help me decide and give me some feedback in the comments.

My vote is for crackle batik, with the dark fabric in 3rd photo for binding. It has lots of interest without being overwhelming. Or too shy. 2nd place to the stripe in the 2nd photo. The 2 darker fabrics might work if you want something bolder overall. The other 2 light fabrics have no omph to bring to this show.

I love the crackle batik. Too bad you don't have enough for the whole thing. Darling little blocks.

I also like the crackle batik. It blends well with your blocks.

Happy Thanksgiving Kathy!

The crackle spoke to me too. Although I like the stripe and I don't think the darker stripe will detract at all.

Let's make it unanimous! The crackle batik works really well, and the possible border is yummy.

OK, I also like the crackle, with the background stripe second.

Love that crackle! Do you have enough of the stripe for binding?

Oh my gosh, they are tiny!
Another vote for the crackle.

Crackle all the way!
Looks like this will be a bright and happy placemat!

Yep it's the crackle for me too! I quite like the stripe idea for the binding but used vertically? Sweet little blocks though!

I am always glad when I have bossy blocks and fabric - nice job

I vote for the crackle batik. The stripe is a close second.

They are tiny!!! So cute!!
I will go with the Crackle batik with the stripe. The dark aqua with citrus green for Border or binding aqua and the spotty one for backing.
Have fun!

Since someone has to be different - I like the stripe =). Don't you just 'love' when the fabrics are bossy like that?

It crack(le)s me up that everyone likes the crackle, including me! And besides, it's fun to say - crackle, crackle, crackle!

My vote was for the crackle batik even before I started ready the comments. Poor Kathy, you pulled so many fabrics, set them all up beautifully to take lovely pictures just so we can all vote for the first one. Ironic! On the other hand, it was fun seeing the differences the sashings brought to the blocks. Enjoy! ;^)

Yep, the crackle, but the stripe would work, too.
Sometimes I wish my fabrics and scraps would tell me what they want to be. This will be a fun and playful placemat to brighten someone's day.

The crackle or the stripe are my favorites, Kathy. Good luck with your decision!

I'm with the stripe! I like the long lines. Happy Thanksgiving!

Yep, the crackle! (Don’t you wish electing a President was this easy?). Yay for the bossy green blocks. I love it when fabrics tell me what to do with them!

Crackle! “See” you at the Guelph meeting tonight?

Oh yes, it will be beautiful ... and yes, it is very easy if you - like me - only look at it once. The fabric on the left (green) and also on the far left (the uncut fabric, green / blue, if the other is not enough) fit perfectly.
I hope you enjoy sewing ... best regards Viola.
I'm curious :-))

The crackle batik spoke to me first. Then the striped one said it would work too. They are cute little blocks. Even if they are bossy.

I like the crackle best, then I like the green stripe. Hugs,

I like both the crackle batik and the stripe. Here's a curve ball for you--could you use them both?

Hi Kathy! My choice would be that crackle batik. Can’t wait to see what you chose!

I like the crackle and the stripe - well, all of the light choices and maybe you could even mix and match? The border fabric is nice too!

Go with the crackle. Your choice at the end of the day.

Hi,
I like the darker choice of the crackle, but feel the blocks are telling you to look a little further in your stash for the one they really want. lol All the other choices are too little contrast with the blocks, and therefore the blocks don't stand out and shine like they want to. Anyway, that's what the blocks told me. Bossy little things, aren't they?
Hugs, Judy

I like the batik on the left. It is bright and seems to pair nicely with the patchwork! Just like a fine wine!!! haha
