Scrappy Saturday

Another crazy week is over and I am relaxing today by sewing some tiny random 1" bits of purple fabric into 9 patch blocks. Purple is the January colour for the Rainbow Scrap Challenge and I have just finished my 9th purple block.
I was so sad reading the news that Sue Garman died, which was announced this week by The Quilt Show. I have followed Sue's blog for years and have been inspired by her quilting and life adventures. She was an amazing woman with a fascinating career at NASA, followed by a brilliant career as a creative quilter, teacher, pattern designer and blogger.
The news of her passing inspired me to get out my own Sue Garman project called Omigosh. You can see her original version of the pattern on her blog post from 2008 here. I've been working on my version for more than 3 years now and I have 84 of the double nine patch blocks done (110 are needed), but haven't even started sewing the second block yet! It's a perfect RSC challenge project, and I enjoy picking it up now and then to make more blocks with small scraps around the sewing room.
To see what the RSC quilters are making this week, hop over to the weekly link up at SoScrappy.

it was sad for Sue Garman's family to loose her and her husband just a few short months before, I follow her blog and knew it was coming but it was awfully fast - maybe that was a good thing that she didn't suffer for months on end. She was so creative. I saw her daughter's post on her blog that they are keeping the pattern site open - I made her Star Crazy quilt about 5 years ago I guess it was and plenty more I would like to make one day

I pulled out my Bits and Bobs this week for an accounting too, after reading of Sue's death. Your purples look lovely!

That is sad news. I should pull out my own top and work on the borders.

I actually made my OMG in about two weeks after the death of my son. It helped me through the whole process. I know you can do it. Charge on!

It is so sad about Sue and her husband, both brilliant individuals in their own career fields. She will be missed. You have now given me a project for RSC 2017. I have been wanting to make this quilt and now I will do that in memory of Sue. Such a wonderful person and she will be missed in our little world of quilting.

Omigosh has been on my someday list for a long time. Maybe this year should be the year. Thanks for the link to her blog. Every page has about 10 years-worth of inspiration.

Such gorgeous purpleness!! : )
Sue was an inspiration and we will feel her loss. What a legacy she has left!

Inspiring women are so missed. Your omigosh blocks are growing the stack though they use so little fabric. Soon you'll be starting that second block.

Your stack is Omigosh all by itself. What a great tribute.

This looks like the perfect time to work on this quilt, in memory of its designer. I went over and looked at the original Omigosh, and sure enough, I said "Omigosh!" too!

Oh! Sue Garman! I just put the binding on one of her designs last month!

What a HUGE stack of blocks! Yes. A good time to keep going. I am off to look at the picture of the quilt. Lorraine

Sad news.
OMG! That will be an awesome quilt someday. I enjoy looking at it when you bring it out to work on now and then.

Sue came to my large guild a few years ago. I've made some 9 patches, to make a OMG quilt one day (it's my screen saver on my phone). I saw it on a card, and fell in love with the pattern. I don't have the real pattern, but, just started it, since someone had said what size the blocks were.

Love your colorful blocks, Kathy.

Very pretty blocks. I just realized how many seams are in those blocks. Those are definitely a labor of love!
