UFO deadline approaches

My October (and September!) UFO project is being worked on, but I haven't posted about it recently.

The backing was pieced, the pin basting was done and the quilting was started.

I decided since I didn't really love this old UFO and therefore didn't feel at all worried about quilting it, that I would try a new (to me) quilting idea - a spiral design. I first saw this on Crazy Mom Quilts - tutorial is here. The center rings went well using the free motion foot and then I changed to the walking foot as recommended in the tutorial. And the quality of the curves went down hill!

I was okay with that since I was enjoying the process. I continued to try to make the starts/stops smoother and make the repositioning of the quilt less dramatic ( a little bit at a time) so the curves would be smoother.

I am not marking the lines, just guesstimating where the next line might be. For some unknown reason the rings keep getting wider? It's kind of fun, but I'm not sure how it will look when it's done. Stay tuned. I plan to finish it by Friday if all goes well.

Hmm, that's the opposite from what I learned. I start with the FMQ foot and then switch to the walking. This should give great texture to your UFO.

Those quilts we aren't in love with are great for practicing new techniques. Glad you are enjoying it!

I will have to remember the circles as I begin trying to do more of my quilt with the machine - just can't keep up anymore with just hand quilting although I will always have one on my frame

Good looking curves on the stars. It gives the quilt a little motion. Keep at it. I'm cheering you on!

I love to take quilt tops that I don't love and use them to practice new things. I think you will be pleasantly surprised by your quilting when you are done. It's going to look great.

I am ready to quilt a lap quilt for our church faire and will quilt it this way. I didn't know it had a name! Thanks for the tip on changing feet. G

Hmmm, I haven't seen this before. I think your circles are amazingly well spaced. I would not be able to do that without marking!

I've been wanting to try the spiral quilting! Great to try it on a quilt you're not as invested in.:)
