Design Wall Monday #39

Continuing with my theme of scraps from yesterday's post,  this is the scrap quilt that my little quilt group ("the Sew 'n Sews") has been working on for the Mennonite Relief sale and quilt auction in the spring.

This quilt was originally inspired by "Crazy Mom's" quilt on this blog post. We thought it would be a great design that could accommodate 4 different 1/4" seam measurements :)

And we were right...the rows sewed together quite well with a minimum of fudging and stretching!

This quilt top is already bigger than my design wall (you can see the corners flopping over at the top) and we are now deciding if we want to add borders to it or not.
It is a quite an interesting quilt to look at, containing the bright scraps from the stashes of 4 quite divergent stashes. Some of the blocks are almost like an "I Spy" quilt with so many things that a child would enjoy looking at...a castle, fairies, cats, etc.
It all started with a little starter kit that I put together...kind of like a quilty friendship dough.
I made up these fabrics kit to start from, and each quilter added their own ingredients/scraps from their stash.
Any ideas about the borders???

Nifty quilt. I vote for a lime green border! It's my turn to pick a pattern for my E quilters group -- I wouldn't mind sending a little kit like that although we've recently figured out how easy it is to send email directions if no specific fabric is involved. Decisions, decisions! Bonnie in Va.

Love the raffle quilt. It's so cherry. A great pattern for a group project.

"Friendship Dough" sounds like fun. That could be the name since a Raffle Quilt is the means to make some "dough" or $$. Yours turned out nice, I like the diagonal chains and I spy prints. Good luck with the raffle. I see a Blue border, just to frame it.

What a great idea - a starter kit! I am going to approach my Guild with this idea if you don't mind.

Very clever to make up the kits. Love the results!

Oh my, but that is a fun quilt. Some quilts are quite happy to be finished without borders, and maybe that is one of them. I see it finished simply with a bright binding. Is it the Mennonite sale near Waterloo that you donate to?

What a fun way to start a quilt and still let others have input. I love the way it turned out -- so bright and happy. Another band of white in the border would definitely keep the brightness going, maybe with a final border of the blue that seems to be a common theme. A scrappy binding would be the perfect finishing touch.

Quilty friendship dough--you are so clever to start off your players with a starter pack! I vote for no border and just a purple or other dark binding.

I want to go home and sew now........

I love the idea of starting with a kit, just enough unifying to keep the quilt together. I would use a small blue inner border to stop the blocks and then a larger multicolored border to finish. I might even do a scrappy binding. Did everyone get blocks?

Great quilt.
I would do a narrow border of white and then a piano key or 4 patch border or even a border of a four patch and plain block alternating like in the quilt.

Love and hugs Gina xxx

Looks terrific, Kathy. I would stop right there and not put a border on. Some kind of dark binding would be all that is needed to frame the blocks.

I think this calls for a blue border and maybe a gold accent border. Great job!

What a great idea -- to start with a scrap kit and then add to it. I love how that quilt is turning out. I'd be tempted to add 2 borders -- one dark, quite thin and another wider one. A print that picked up a lot of the colours in teh quilt would be great for the outer border.

I love the name "Friendship Dough". Great suggestion. If it is intended for a young child I'd stop right there. I would bind it with a scrappy neon green or bubble gum pink. Quilting it with the green or pink used in the binding would also give it more punch! Good luck fundraising with it. I've enjoyed my visit to your blog.

I’d love to have you link up at my place on November 5th and 6th for The Airing of the Quilts.

The border does make a big difference. Your project turned out to be lovely.
