I often hear people ask "What are you going to do with that?" or "Who are you making that for?" Earlier in my life I usually had an answer - a reason or occasion that I was starting a project. But now I don't seem to as often, and I usually answer "to make me happy" ( or "sane", depending on the day), or "I am making it for myself", or "I want to create something beautiful". For me, that is enough of a reason.
Some people really don't understand this and look at me like I have lost my mind. Maybe I have?!? But it is the reason why after 40 years of quilting and hand stitched crafts I am still working on more projects.
Society does not "need" the things I make, and my family certainly doesn't "need" more quilts to stay warm. I do these stitching projects because I can't seem to stop doing it! Truthfully I don't feel well or "like myself" when I don't stitch something. But when I stitched this little wren I was in my own little happy world, using all the colours of thread, wondering how the bird would turn out, and forgetting about all the sadness, trials, disappointments, violence, conflict and loss that humans have to endure.
And what about this thing?
So there you have it - three of the projects my hands have touched this week. Today I will be at the Fergus Scottish Festival sitting around a quilting frame and putting stitches into a quilt with quilters I only get to visit once a year!

I agree with everything you wrote, Kathy! I stitch and quilt because it makes me happy and keeps me sane. It's always lovely to see what you've been working on through the week. Have a wonderful Sunday!
Oh, I do get you, and I'm sure I'm not the only one. Sewing, painting, knitting, etc., are parts of our life history and I believe has become part of our DNA. The people who don't understand you haven't discovered their inner child who still wants to doodle and paint and craft. Lol. I become grumpy and moody when I don't get to craft for a long period of time. Not good. So, enjoy your slow down feast today. You have beautiful projects to feed on. ;^)
Oh I have these same thoughts... I don't need to make anymore quilts or stitch anymore samplers but sewing and stitching and knitting and crocheting make me HAPPY and keep me from hurting other people...LOL I LOVE that wren piece you are stitching... thanks for the link ...I'm putting that in my next order. happy stitching!
Very well said and I completely agree. If more people slowed down and did something creative, what a better world this would be.
That Quaker pig is adorable! I do get it, I make quilts I want to make because they make me happy. (And as my husband says, it keeps me of the streets and it makes me easy to locate).

Thank you so much for your post, expecially the first paragraph. The thoughts you share on Slow Sunday Stitching have encouraged and inspired me for years. I once read somewhere something like a day without some kind of stitching is a lost day.
As soon as I saw your piggy cross stitch, I thought of my friend who has a pig as a pet that she loves dearly.
Yes. As we stitch, we forget the painful and focus on beauty.
