Scrappy piano key strips are on the design wall today. These are going to be borders for the scrap vortex quilt. I am piecing the scraps on wax paper to see if I like this technique. It's keeping the strip sets perfectly even and so far, I'm really liking it. A few more sections are needed to add to the quilt top, but right now it's the perfect mindless piecing job!

Please educate me! Why are you using waxed paper to keep the sections straight? I am unfamiliar with that technique!
Yes, I am curious about the wax paper as well. Love the strips, will make a really cute borders
Ooh, you just gave me an idea for something I'm working on! I'm doing a Cal King pineapple log cabin and the blocks are 17 3/4" finished. The way the math works out, I'd like to make it a little bigger but not so much to add another row of blocks, and I didn't want a border that would jump out and detract from the geometric impact of the pineapple blocks. But I will have tons of strips left over when the blocks are done, and maybe a piano key border would do the trick? Love your bright colors, by the way!
Great scrap piano key borders for the vortex quilt. I use paper from old telephone books, and it works fine.
I love the look of the piano key border, but I have never had the patience to make one. This is looking good. I'm guessing that with the use of the wax paper, not a lot of "pressing" takes place as you put this together.
I'm not familiar with the wax paper idea. Sounds interesting. I enjoy reading your blog every day.
I haven't used wax paper often for a foundation but, years ago, I did pick up a roll for paper from the tag end of a newspaper run at our local paper. Lightweight, cheap, and decent size to handle.
just finished a piano key border, lot of mindless sewing but looks great
Zowie...that is going to be one colorful quilt. What a fun way to use up all those scraps. Can't wait to see it all finished.
Ooooo...love that scrappy border! Wonderful!!
Those borders are going to be perfect. Looking forward to seeing those all attached to the quilt.
very nice look forward to the progress on this one......xxx
What fun! They will make a great border.
Nice! I'm glad that technique is working for you. How do you do it? I'm really liking the colors you picked. Very happy scrappy!
Wax Paper is a new way to sew Piano Borders to me. Looks good for the Votex Quilt. Have fun!
Wow! I love them. They also make a cool coin quilt.
