Anyway, I wanted to make a hexagon quilt using Jamie's tutorial (click here to see her instructions) and as soon as I found this box of scraps, I put away all the other projects I was working on and played with some layout options...so fun!
Can you help me decide which one to sew...do you prefer the first random layout, or the second linear light/dark columns layout...and can you tell me why you prefer one over the other?

I like them both but my eyes love the random placement.
I love that you have accepted your organizational challenge and it is no longer considered a problem. That made me smile. :)
I am liking the random version.
I have a set of quilt blocks MIA. With both of our organizational challenges maybe the random is more appropriate than the planned version :)
I like the random better. I hear you on the organization thing. At Jamie's blog I realized I had cut tiny squares for the same quilt... no clue where that is!
Random arrangement works better for me. The eye keeps dancing around the quilt top.
I'm in the random camp-just looks 'right' that way, to me.
I'm with the random camp as well...just appeals to my eye for some reason...surprising as you know how I like things matchy, matchy. Organization occurs many different ways...piling, folders, etc. You just have your own unique organizational style. Remember, to my way of thinking a clean desk is the sign or a sterile mind. LOL. :) Just my two cents.
Random, please! The 60 degree angles in the hexagons are going off in six different directions. The long straight rows seem to want to corral that freedom and force it into a single-dimensional alignment that the angles just don't seem suited for.
I echo Jeanie's thoughts on the layout. Though I am usually one to want order and I have a hard time doing "let the chips fall where they may" type quilts, this is much more visually interesting to me in the random layout
I like the random--it just works with all the different fabrics. As mentioned, your eyes just fly everywhere
I like the straight rows. Different than the other opinions, but I like the stripe effect it creates.
Go Random! Scrappy is best that way in my eye view. The seam in the hexies won't be as noticable. Iv'e seen this block before called "Not your Grandmother's flower garden"...
Maybe diagonal or criss cross would be fun too.
Hello, I really like the linear layout the best. It is more striking and pleasing to look at.

I usually like a scrappy design but I'm rather surprised the vertical design is my favorite of these two. Both are very fun though!
I really like the stripe effect you get with the linear placement.
I like the random look, too. But you could try another pattern - grouping them into bigger 7-hexie stars or flowers, side by side in alternating light and dark values. So, where did you eventually find your box of scaps?
I'm also with the random camp, it's more visually appealing.
I really love the random one!
I love the colors you're using--congrats on finding this yummy box of scraps to play with! So far the linear one is pleasing me more. I'd like it even better if it were diagonal rows...:)
I love the straight rows. The random design has my eyes jumping all over the quilt, whereas my eyes settle on the straight design. Other colors might work totally differently though. But both will work!
I prefer the random layout...but which do you (or your receiver prefer)?
What a fun discussion. I surprised myself by being in the random camp also. I didn't know why, but after reading the comments, I agree with Big Rig John's comment -- your eye keeps moving around rather than just following a straight line. Fun project either way!
I think I'm going to have to go with the smaller crowd for the more planned, stripe layout. I'm not sure why, other than my eye seems to like the more orderly lights and darks.
I can't help myself, I love random. It just seems more restful on the eyes!! I have a bag of these cut too, somewhere! The trouble is I don't have a design wall and I think it's one of those that you really need one for I don't know how I can get them to line up in the right place otherwise. But now I see yours I want to make mine!! It seems like an awesome way to use scraps.
I like the random one, but I'm a random kinda person! ;-)
Random! That is the one that earns my vote. now hexis are something I have yet to try......think that will simply HAVE to change
I like them both. The random version is more my style, but the striped one is appealing too.
Not much help at all, am I?
Random all the way! Seems like ther is more to look at in this version...let us know what you decide!
I usually like the random look with hexagons but when you put both of your layouts up my eye kept going to the straight rows. So my vote is for the straight rows. I think it showcases your fabrics better.
I am on the random side of this one.It justs looks more like me but then this quilt isn't for me so I guess you have to choose which you like better.
At first I thought I liked the linear design but the more I looked at it I have to go with the random. This really looks like a hexie quilt design. Glad you found your scraps......organizational challenges....hmmm I think I have that sometimes.
I prefer the random. It reminds me of the old scrappy quilts where they just put the fabrics together and they always look so 'comfy' and 'like home' to me. Your quilt... your decision!
Glad you found the missing hexagons! I like the random setting. It just speaks to me more than the strippy one. Have fun!
Well, I, too, like the random layout best. I think the rows is kind of boring and dosen't showcase the colors as well.
I am not much help because I like both! The linear design appeals to my sense of wanting to be somewhat orderly but random speaks to me because I am ....random!
I like the random, voting late, sorry. Been a crazy week, and haven't been blogging much.
