Slow Sunday Stitching - New Project

This week I pin basted a quilt top to start hand quilting using a big stitch. This is my first attempt at the larger stitches and thicker thread, and I am really enjoying it so far. It goes much faster and I have already finished the first block. I am quilting 1/4" (or so!) from the seam lines. It's the lazy quilter way to avoid marking lines :)

This photo shows the difference between the quilting needle I usually use, and the new embroidery needle I am using for this project. That's a big adjustment!

The hardest part is getting the stitch length to be consistent. See those big red stitches?!? I am okay with that, because I am just learning. I probably should be using a colour that melts into the background, but that's not as much fun!
I hope you can join in with the slow sunday stitching party today and put in a few fun stitches. Link up your blog post below and share what your hand work project is for today.

I agree big stitching is so much fun. I think your stitches look wonderful! It is an adjustment to try and do bigger stitches. Just remember it is those slightly imperfect stitches that make the finished project so wonderful!

Pretty fabrics in this block. The big stitch is fun. You are doing just fine on your stitches already. They will only get better. What type thread are you using? I once used pearl cotton, but can't remember what size.

It is a perfect quilt for BIG stitching. Your stitches are very consistent for a "beginner". It's beautiful Kathy. Enjoy your Sunday.

Love the contrast with the thread color you have chosen. It looks like a thicker thread than usual too. Enjoy your big stitches.

I love big stitching! Well, I'm not good at tiny stitching, a caveat, lol!

I haven't done the Big Stitch in quite a while. I need to give some thought to doing it again.

I love those big red stitches. My mother is in her eighties and only started quilting a few years ago. She uses a fairly large needle and embroidery floss to complete her quilting. It always looks great.

Consistent stitch size--that is my problem with big stitch. So I tell myself I am trying to make it look "prim". : )

Oh Kathy...I love the star you're featuring...the fabrics are awesome. I love the large stitch hand quilting, too. No need for perfection...even the Navajo Indians would weave a deliberate "mistake" into their rugs because no one could be perfect except the creator. I can't wait to see this one finished.

Love your stitches as always. Love how you stitched the inside of the star - I must remember that for a future quilt!

Love the way the big stitch quilting is looking! You have given me an idea for quilting my Grandmother's Flower Garden quilt. Although the quilting is still a loooong way off!
