Happy Thanksgiving to our American friends who are celebrating this week! Where I live here in Canada, this is just the worst time of year. Our Thanksgiving is in October, so there are no happy holidays in November, the beautiful colours of fall are gone, there is less natural light due to "daylight savings", and the cold winter weather descends.
In the cycle of life, it's the time for hibernation, when we crawl into our caves, try to keep warm, and sleep until better weather returns.
Our modern day life does not allow that cycle, and we have to work just as much in November as in any other month of the year. But we can be sure to follow the healthy practice of having one day of rest each week.
And stitch.
This is a terrible photo (taken late last night) of the embroidery block I'll be working on today. You can see that my pink Frixion pen died while I was tracing the design, and I had to finish with a blue pen.
I look forward to relaxing, stitching and visiting the link ups below to see what you are hand stitching today.

I always thought it would be nice to have our Thanksgiving in October so the holidays would be spread out more. It seems our Thanksgiving gets lost in the rush towards Christmas but not at our house. Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday. I'd rather the children came for Thanksgiving than Christmas. I'm going to enjoy my quiet slow stitching today after having a house full of grands this week, love to see them come, love to see them go!
We loved our low-drama family gathering for Thanksgiving. With your weather up there it sounds like perfect days for extra sewing and stitching. I sew a lot more when it's cold and dark outside. Have a great week, Kathy! Even though your Frixion pen died, I know you'll still have a beautiful block. It's hard to find Frixion pens in stores in Ohio for a reasonable price. I purchased a dozen on eBay and they were only $1 each with FREE SHIPPING. The issue was that they got to pick what color they sent. I got a mixture of purple, blue, black and red. Worked for me!
We tend to call November stick season. I am finally getting some hand quilting in again and making progress. Thanks for the inspiration.
Like Gretchen said above, I'd rather Thanksgiving was a little earlier - the two holidays are crammed together because retail has made it all about shopping for Christmas now - it wasn't like that when I was a child we had two separate holidays, I barely remember what is was like to have so many months of cold weather in the winter - I should I did grow up with winter from October to April, now we complain of cold weather for half of November (sometimes) until the end of February.
It is getting colder here today too, I love the change of season. Thanksgiving is celebrated for several days, with a big dinner last night with friends. I'll begin packing away some of my turkey collection today, and Christmas will come out this week. I like it when Thanksgiving lands early like this year to have a bit more holiday time. Stay warm! I'll be working on my redwork while watching football today.
Have a relaxing day with your stitching today! I’m not fond of the darkness at this time of year either.
I agree about hibernating. It's difficult to get out and enjoy the fresh air when all I want to do is hunker down. I guess it doesn't help that most of the days the last month have been grey and wet. We are fortunate to have a hobby to cheer us on these grey days.
I always look forward to the time in January when you start to notice the light coming back! Not a fan of these dark days either. But I will stitch any day! Enjoy your stitching time today, Kathy!
Enjoy your day of rest and stitching.
It's been so dull here in my part of the UK over the last couple of days and staying in and stitching has been great! I hope you have a nice restful day full of happy sewing!
Hi Kathy....Sundays are a restful day for me...especially now that Winter is fast approaching. Enjoy your restful day too.
Have you used those Frixxion pens extensively? I'm nervous about them, but resorted to using one to trace needleturn applique shapes the other day on an olive green fabric. The pencils and chalks I was using before keep smudging and the washaway markers are either too hard to see against the green or else the line is too thick for me to know where to turn the fabric under. Hopefully any blue Frixxion ink that doesn't wash out completely will be hidden in the turned under allowance of the leaves.
At least there is time for slow stitching under warm quilts. Hope you had a relaxing weekend.
