For the past 2 months the two primary projects in the sewing room have been the Unity mystery and mask making.
musician face masks
The requests for face masks is starting to ease up, so that means more quilting time. Yah! For some reason it doesn't feel as "heavy" or emotionally intense to sew the masks as it did in March and April. Are you finding that too? Maybe it's because it appears as though the medical staff have enough of the approved N95 masks at the moment and the worry about their safety and protection has eased a bit?
I am actually starting to enjoy picking fabrics from my stash to match the interests of receivers. I'm seeing about a quarter to a third of shoppers wearing masks around here. And I get compliments every single time I wear mine (the one at the top of this photo) to the grocery store!
May Mini Arrowheads
And in between those two projects, I am using my mini arrowhead blocks as leader-ender pieces. It's just fun to watch blocks build slowly over time. These are the green blocks made in May so far. If they look familiar it might be because I finished a blue bed size Arrowhead quilt last month. These little blocks will be 3" in the mini RSC version.
Here are the 25 green blocks in the collection so far. You can see more of the block collection here. Linking up to the RSC weekly scrap party.
I do agree that sewing masks is more fun when the health care workers have gotten what they need. Such a great way to put all those fun conversation prints to good use.
I agree with you about mask-making! At first I was so picky about fabric selection. I changed thread a lot. And, yes, the pressure is off. But it looks as though masks will be part of our everyday wear for the short term, if not the long term, and we mask-makers will be called on to make replacements, or just additions for variety's sake.
It is fun to see what different kinds of prints people use in their masks! Makes me wish I had more novelty prints in my stash. Love your Arrowhead blocks - they are pretty in every color!
Many restrictions have lifted here, but masks are still recommended when in public. Sadly, many people are ignoring that. When I went to the post office and grocery store yesterday I saw a huge reduction in the number of masks worn by patrons, though employees are all still wearing them. So, yes, it has lightened up. After making 165 of them, I have no requests lately. So there are 6 or 8 sitting without a home, and another bakers dozen cut out and ready to stitch up in minutes. Our church meetings start up the 3rd week of June, with masks and social distancing between households requested. Maybe I will find homes for these masks then. Oh, your mini arrowhead blocks make me want to start stitching every time I see them. They are so cute and so graphically appealing. It will have to go on the "someday" list.
Cute masks! I have cats on the mask I wear in public. I went to a different grocery store today and was happy to see about 70% wearing masks. Much different from Sam's club and Publix. We have opened up (too much I think ) and it will be interesting to see what our numbers looks like in a few weeks. Those little blocks are becoming a nice collection one leader and ender each time. Pretty dark greens you have.
3" arrowhead blocks are ADORABLE. What cute fabrics for masks. Yes, I feel things aren't as heavy as it was 2-3 months ago. I still think things are going to be with us for a while, but we aren't seeing it as bad as the media was making it out to be with the big outbreaks that hit hard at first. I still feel for those that loss during those big outbreaks. It's still a challenge financially for some but there are some aids available. Faith, not fear.
Your mini arrowhead blocks are just such good eye candy! My mantra has always been, “you can’t have too much green”. I think I may be finished making masks too! I made 2 extra for my sister, she didn’t request some in different colors, but there was a huge HINT in the conversation. When we go out, my DH and I are the only ones with masks on! I haven’t been into the grocery store, we use curbside pickup, but I don’t see them going in and out! Sigh!
Almost no one else wears masks here, but I have too many little people dependent on me to risk falling ill. Current CDC guidelines recommend masks in school this fall, so I’m going to try to get a stash of masks made in case that recommendation becomes reality!
Cute prints for the masks. Great progress on your Arrowhead quilt.

ReplyDeleteGreat blocks. I've only finished 4 masks in the last week or so. I still have a stack waiting to be stitched.
