Design Wall Monday

I haven't written a design wall post for a while but am happy today to share a new project I have started.

I was inspired by seeing this scrappy quilt made by a quilting friend (Nellie), and being hand bound by another quilting friend (Barb). I love this scrap pattern! Barb called it a "potato chip" quilt which I researched on line and found a good tutorial on the Alamosa Quilter blog

I studied how Nellie made her  blocks, noticing that she made one light round of rectangles in each block. Then I dug into the scrap bin, and started cutting and sewing. It was so much fun!

Here is my first block on the design wall. I used yellow as a light contrast round because there were not many light neutrals in the bin I was working from. I also would like to find some brighter colours to add into future blocks and will pull from another scrap bin for the next one.

I have many more rectangles cut and am ready to start sewing more blocks! I am enjoying the energy that a new project brings!

  1. I like those potato chip blocks, too, and have made a couple! Such a great way to use up scrappy strips. Have fun making more!

  2. A ring of value contrast helps these blocks from being a hard-to-focus-on hodge podge. Great idea!

  3. Awesome scrappy quilt. The Potato Chip blocks seem to be all the rage online these days and there are lots of different ways of putting them all together. I have a couple sets of these blocks going too, and have lots of the "chips" cut for more. They are kind of addictive to make.

  4. They are addictive. Although something like this is totally out of my comfort zone I couldn't stop at one. I didn't put the light ring around like Nellie but after seeing hers I wished I had...although I sashed mine with black and will bind it with black. Enjoy making yours...glad to see you back on Monday.

  5. The potato chips blocks are the current block drive for Covered in Love. They're called potato chip blocks because you can't eat (make) just one. As noted by several others, they can be addictive.

  7. Looks like this project will involve some fun deep-diving into the scraps. It is a fun block. Any idea how many you will make?

  8. Is it called potato chip because you cannot make just one? LOL!! Looks addicting, and will chew up a lot of scraps.

  9. It's a fun block to make. I have a purple and yellow scrappy quilt made from that block, it was my first scrap quilt and I still love it. Have fun!
