Slow Sunday Stitching

Welcome to the weekly hand stitching party!

Christmas is less than 20 days away, so this Christmas elf is starting to work herself into a bit of a frenzy. She needs a day off to simmer down, do some deep breathing, and set more realistic goals for what is actually doable in December.

Have you set up your 2020 quarantree

Does it look like this one?!? LOL

Another tea towel was finished this week. This was one of my favourite designs to stitch. Maybe because it generated constant thoughts of chocolate?!?

These are the 4 towels I've stitched this year.

This pattern collection called Stitcher's Revolution has been so fun to work on play with this year. I just need to finish one more towel before Christmas.  The iron transfer is finished so I'm ready to start stitching today.

Does anyone have a recommendation for an embroidery kit that I could purchase for a gift for a brand new beginner stitcher? If you know of a good resource for me, leave a comment or send me an email.

What are you hand stitching today? Are you finishing things for Christmas gifts? Link up your blog post or instagram below and share your progress with us.

You are invited to the Inlinkz link party!

  1. I had my daughter and oldest granddaughter start embroidering with Aunt Martha's iron on blocks. They were simple baby farm animals made with a single line. I did the more advance feet stitching since they weren't ready for that yet. I think I've seen the blocks at JoAnn Fabrics. Happy stitching!

  2. All your tea towels are lovely but yes the chocolate one is my favourite too. The days seem to speed by even faster in the run up to Christmas don't they. Have a great week and thanks for hosting.

  3. If it’s for s girl Usborne has a series of kits that are Pre transferred and come with a hoop, needle, floss and instruction book. I think there are 4 styles. I’ve carried both the mermaid and unicorn in my store.

  5. I started with small scraps of aida cloth 14 count probably... and did counted cross stitch lid tops for canning jars for Christmas presents for family.. it was a hit! I was 6 or 7 then... it helped me control the needle point better and the needle point of cross stitch needles is a bit dull so that helps too I think. I added a puff of batting under my stitchery and over the lid so it popped up a bit... fun memory ... hope this helps you :)

  8. I remember my grandma using iron-on patterns when I was about 6. I didn't get it back then. Then about three years ago a friend gave me a bunch of vintage quilting stuff that she didn't want or use. There were a whole bunch of packages of the brand my grandma used in there. I totally saw it as a blessing. Happy stitching.LOVE your towels!

  9. I still have not started my Stitcher's Revolution piece. Maybe this week. When I was beginning stitching, I made several Bucilla crewel pieces, the larger threads were easy to work with.

  10. I have a bunch of those Stitcher's Revolution transfers. They are all a lot of fun and perfect for towels. I used to embroider a bunch of towels, make hotpads and crochet dishcloths and scrubbies as sets for Christmas gifts but haven't done that in a couple of years.

My grandmother taught me embroidery and made me a pillowcase and stamped the edge of it with an easy pillowcase transfer of Xs and lazy daisies. She let me pick the colors of thread I wanted to use. I was so proud of that pillowcase and loved the process.

I tried the same thing with my granddaughters when they were about 8 (they are 16 now) and they showed no interest at all in finishing the pillowcases after they tried a few stitches. I was disappointed that they didn't enjoy the process but maybe they will be interested again later in life and I'll be there with those same unfinished pillowcases (if I can find them at that time)!!

  12. I laughed so hard at your quarantree! That is very clever. Your towels are so fun and I love them.

All my kids know how to embroidery. I used a piece of muslin and wrote their names in bubble letters - this was when they were 4 or 5. We started with the plain back stitch around the outsides - I stitched with them.

Once the outsides were finished, we did different stitches inside the letters - lazy daisy, spoke, all different things. They seemed to like it more when I was sitting with them.

Now, the kids only make things when an occasion arises. A friends (or family member's) birthday, sewing for Halloween, etc. I am hoping that as they get older they will learn how much enjoyment can be had just sitting and stitching.

  14. Have you considered Mary Maxim in Paris? They carry all kinds of cross stitch kits and probably embroidery kits also. And they have a HUGE yarn clearance section.

  15. No suggestions for stitching, but I wondered if I could post Quaran-tree on FB? So funny!

  17. Love your towels. I was inspired by your stitching to take it up again. Bought some transfers from Stitcher's Revolution and some towels and have been stitching since September. I think the Chocolate one may be for Valentine's day. Still need to finish Christmas but having fun stitching again.

  18. I started as a child on printed pillow cases, easy back stitch and lazy daisy chains, as I recall. I gave up hand embroidery when my arthritis and carpel tunnel made it impossible, but recently discovered Drop Cloth Samplers on etsy. I ordered one that uses just a running stitch and am slowly making my way. She offers great printed kits where a newbie could learn and try all kinds of stitches and end up with a fun sampler. https://www.etsy.com/shop/DropclothSamplers?ref=simple-shop-header-name&listing_id=117746258

  19. Your tea towels all look great! I think I might have those embroidery transfers - I will have to look. I don't have recommendations for an embroidery kit. Maybe someone on Etsy sells small ones. You could look at 123Stitch.com. They have lots of ross stitch kits, but I haven't checked on any embroidery kits.
