August UFO on the design wall

Some progress is being made on my UFO of the month.  The enthusiasm for making more blocks for this Moda Blockheads II project was completely gone, so I decided to just finish this quilt with the blocks I had already made. 

 To make the layout work out, I had to remove 2 blocks, so the fish and the windmill were moved to the back of the quilt. Then I played with various layout combinations and decided to sew it together in sections with some white sashing to calm it down a bit.. 

 Tada! The blocks are sewn together and I like it! But the size is 45.5" x 44" which is an odd size. I can't decide if this is a wallhanging or a lap quilt... should I make it longer to be more rectangular shaped? Make some pieced borders?

    I always prefer rectangular throws. It is lovely and I bet you will have enough enthusiasm now to add a row at the top or bottom. You could start with the 2 cast off blocks........

    I like it Kathy, but if you want a more rectangular lap quilt, I would add some pinwheels, broken dish, or 9-patch blocks on the horizon sashing. If you add a sashing above or below these added blocks, it might be long enough. The middle would had to be on top of the 12" block. The added blocks could be 3 or 4 inches. I don't think they need to be big but that's up to you. Good luck with the decision. ;^)

    I think you could add a border with the top and bottom larger than the side borders.

    I love square quilts....I have a love for symmetrical LOL. I think I would put a border of white around (same size as sashings) and then a piano key border all around or maybe delectable nountains? There's a really easy way to do them with hst's cut into strips and then rearrange them to form the mountain border :-).

    Do you ever use quilts as a table cloth? This could work on a rectangular table by placing on the diagonal over a plain white cloth.

    That’s so pretty. For table toppers or wallhangings I prefer square, but for throws I prefer rectangular.

    Personally, I would add a solid border maybe 1.5" on the sides and 2.5" top/bottom. Then a pieced border again smaller on the sides than top/bottom.

    I love it, it’s beautiful! I would like it longer for a lap quilt but it would also make a lovely wall hanging. I like the sashing too. Hugs,

    It looks perfectly fine as it is. OK Maybe a narrow plain border.
    Would make a great lap quilt, or wall hanging.
    Lovely to finish something.

    Sometimes you just know when you are done with something, whether it is "finished" according to the pattern or not.
    This looks like a good layout, and I think it is a great size for a baby quilt. :)

    The colours work so well.
    I would add a top &a bottom sashing. Then add a pieced top and bottom border

    Since you stopped making blocks and relegated some to the back I would say let it be...stop...end it there,...back away from the quilt!haha I know you give to charities so maybe a little person would love this size quilt. I think any pieced blocks or border combinations would take away from the random placement of the blocks you already have made. Good luck with your decision making!!

    You could add a piano key border. They look good and use up extra fabric, too! Use shorter strips on the sides, longer ones on the top and bottom.

    Beautiful. I made my Moda Blockheads 2 quilt in red white and blue for my footie team. I would have never chosen your colours, however my daughter wanted those colours for her house warming quilt - and I love them now. Your quilt is beautiful.

    You could add some pieced borders to the top and bottom to make it rectangular, but it looks terrific the way it is.
