Home Grown Quilt Top

It is Remembrance Day today in Canada.
Every year at the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month we spend a moment in silence to show respect to and appreciation for all those who have sacrificed for our freedom and safety.

It seems like the perfect day to show this project honouring love, family,  and home.
I have been working hard on my "Home Grown" quilt (pattern by Nancy Halvorsen, fabric kit by Cherished Pieces). I know it doesn't look like much, but this house was really hard to make.
R e a l l y . h a r d!
One of the challenges was the intense and lengthy cutting instructions which you can read about here. You have no idea how complicated this pattern is, even though most of it is panels!

One of the problems was that the written instructions, and the book illustration, and the included photo at the bottom (which was a life saver) were not the same. You see the house illustration on the pattern in the middle of the photo where the "blue house" roof piecing layout is backwards? It took me way too long to correctly reverse this in my mind, and then translate my tenuous understanding of the required changes to the fabric. The number of mistakes and do-overs was embarrassing.

Anyway, in spite of my confusion and many mistakes requiring seam ripper intervention, I have finally finished the quilt top on my design wall!
💖 I adore this quilt and forgive it all the frustration in the making! 💖
Thank you to Cherished Pieces for a fabulous kit, with ample fabric provided to cover my many mistakes!

And also... just as an aside... I was watching the Fons and Porter Love of Quilting TV show and noticed that they were sewing with fabrics from the same line as I was this weekend!
What are the chances of that??!?

  1. Your HOME quilt is so impressive! You ought to be proud of yourself, regardless of all the "imperfection" you see. I call it a little Masterpiece! Congratulations! ;^)

  2. It's 100 years since we commemorated our first Remembrance Sunday and yesterday 10,000 veterans marched past the cenotaph. It's very emotional and humbling to watch. I love blocks with houses and these are real beauties! I'm so glad you persevered with this one it's gorgeous!

  3. That house looks like a simple log cabin type of assembly, which as you said doesn't look that hard. I hate badly written directions!! Cute project though. I once saw a fabric I had in my stash on F&P, but never while I was working with it, what are the odds?

  4. Super cute top! Too bad the instructions were lousy. Pattern writing isn't an easy skill. It makes me appreciate the ones that ARE well written.

  5. Good thing you had pictures to look at. Sometimes I find the patterns hard to understand depending on how well they are written. You persevered and got it done! I am cranking out UFOs while I have my friend's machine to get them quilted with.

  6. What a nice quilt -- I especially like the pieced houses and lettering. It is hard to write instructions. What makes perfect sense to the writer may not make sense to the reader. I've created some block designs for Block Lotto this year and always have a couple of people read them prior to publishing them.

  7. If an experienced quilter like you had problems, imagine how someone like me and I admit this freely, who is a bit "slap dash" in my endeavours would manage!

  8. Paper piecing is hard, working with tiny pieces and multiple cutting instructions is harder! It looks lovely, though, in your finished block.

Remembering....and thankful for peace in our part of the world...
