In my photo from last week's DWM, I had used "background" squares in the block because that's what the directions said. Background to me means neutral fabrics. But in the photo of Bonnie's quilt, she used yellow 3.5" squares.
I tried that out and liked it better. See how the block on the left has background squares and the block on the right has yellow squares? Yep, the yellow shines more, and shining as much light as possible is always the goal! So I recut those pieces and started sewing the blocks together.
The next decision was what to do about those pink stars in the sashing. It was too scrappy for my liking in the above photo. I like scrappy for sure, but that was too much, even for me! So I am grouping the pink star points with the same fabrics together as you can see in this photo. Oh I see one star point on the right is upside down... good thing the sashing isn't sewn together yet.
I am really having so much fun with this project. It's like one big jigsaw puzzle! There is still lots of sewing to do, but it's taking shape and looking more like a quilt.

That's probably why Bonnie suggested the magenta to be one colour. The stars do look better in one colour. I also did my yellow squares in one colour because that's what I had... good work.
ReplyDeleteI'm still on the fence about putting the yellow in my quilt. I like how yours is looking. I might wait a little while longer before cutting into my yellows.
ReplyDeleteI had to reject the Yellow. After Allietare and the screaming yellow/gold. I found a few randomly placed blocks after taking pictures. Thank heaven for our cameras!
ReplyDeleteYes, the yellow does brighten it up, though I liked it with your background fabric, too. : )
ReplyDeleteGood call on the star points matching--does give a cohesiveness to the design.
The yellow does add a glow to the blocks--very pretty!
ReplyDeleteI love Bonnie's quilts but sometimes they are too scrappy for me - I love scrappy but I am more of a controlled scrappy person - love what you are doing with the quilt.
ReplyDeleteThe yellow really does make those stars shine, good decision!
ReplyDeleteHave been sewing on my En Provence for a couple weeks. There seems to be alot of sewing and seams.I am about the same place as you, just need to finish sewing the sashing together then start making the top! Must get this one off my plate so I can start a commission project of handquilting.
ReplyDeleteYour colours are great!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful! Is yours going to be this size or more squares to come?
ReplyDeleteSmart lady - I usually mess up and sew it upside down and then get to go to a ripping party - Or somehow from the design wall to the machine someone turns it around on me - phantom helper I guess! I agree with all of your changes, the yellow makes the block really pop!
ReplyDeleteyours look awesome! it's fine to change colors, with the city one a few years ago I changed her grey to black, just because I didn't have much grey and then several people saw it and changed theirs too.
ReplyDeleteYour colour verion is very nice.
ReplyDeleteBonnie's quilts are always a challenge that end up being a lot of fun, Hope she continues her yearly mystery for a long time to come.
ReplyDeleteI agree... the yellow brings the light into the blocks. Your color choices are so fun and happy! It's looking good!
ReplyDeletePretty stars!
ReplyDeleteI'm pretty sure Bonnie intended those 3.5" squares to be yellows not background. In her quilt they are yellow and I thought they stuck out too much. So I used two yellows that were much more subtle and so far I like the way they look. But each main block takes forever to sew together. I'm glad I decided to only do 9 blocks and not 16.
ReplyDeleteYour stars really are glowing!
ReplyDeleteI've got some bits laid out, but no blocks sewn together yet. I still have a lot of parts to assemble!
Your blocks are going to be so pretty.
ReplyDeleteFantastic 💖
ReplyDeleteoh yes, definitely twinkling with the yellow. congratulations
ReplyDeleteIt really glows, Kathy. Your colours have worked beautifully! I like the scrappy pink stars, but, it has to feel right to you. Onwards!
ReplyDeleteYour fabric choices are so fun..........and on my computer screen look tropical in nature! Good choice with the yellow!
ReplyDeleteThe yellow definitely works better than the background fabrics in your blocks. It's been interesting seeing the different directions people have gone. How successful the use of the yellow is seems to depend a lot on what colors you've used. Your's are looking gorgeous!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful! The yellow really does shine. Like happy light through an open window.
