I have been working on some of the sampler quilt blocks from the local July Shop Hop. When I was at quilt retreat I started this block and was able to finish it this week . It is an embroidery design in the centre of a pieced churn dash block.
Next up is a hexagon block, which unfortunately I am not enjoying. I hoped I would enjoy these hexies more since other hand stitchers seem to like making them. I have enjoyed making small hexies in the past, and I think the problem with this block is that the fabric pieces are precut and it's a struggle to have enough of a seam allowance to baste over the edges of the paper hexagons. The next step will be to whip stitch them together. I think I'll enjoy that stitching more. What are you hoping to work on today? Link up your blog post below and share your hand stitching project.
Lovely embroidered block there Kathy! I also have not been bitten by the contagious hexi making bug.. maybe I will try it sometime... but not in the very near future! lol Have fun with those hexi's ... then this block will soon be behind you :) Thanks for the linky party !!! Kathi

Your embroidered block is cute. I like the blue fabrics for the hexie block, but it has to be frustrating if there isn't enough fabric to fold over to baste. Thankfully it is only 1 block, not a whole quilt! Have a peaceful Sabbath. Gretchen
I like those little clips too and glad I got them last year on a black friday sale - more rain coming later today I'm going to be working on my circles.
The hexies may be a pain to baste because of the lack of fabric but maybe you will find some consolation in the fact that the fabric you are using looks wonderful!
I've never used precut fabric for hexies . . . and I always am (a little over) generous with my seam allowances for just that reason! I hope the basting part goes quickly and you can move on to whipping them together! I love hexie hand work! :)
Love the churn dash with the embroidery. I have just started churn dash blocks with crazy quilt block in the center. Really enjoying the hand stitching on the block.
Well, the hexie fabric is pretty, even if it is scant! I see you have the expensive thread there. I use all my rattiest old poly blend thread for basting. It is so rough that it holds really well, and between my old thread and my grandmother's old thread, I'm pretty sure that I have a lifetime supply!
The stitched block is really pretty. Are they all going to be churn dashes? Love them!
Hi, Kathy: You might want to try glue-basting those hexies - I use the Sewline glue to affix the seam allowances to the paper, and it releases when you pull the paper back out. If you still want to hand-baste, you may also want to try Bonnie Hunter's method of basting the hexie and sewing it to the next one right away, it sure saves time and effort! You can find her method on the "Tips and Techniques" tab on her blog, www.quiltville.blogspot.ca . Good luck!
Yep, I recommend glue basting too. I haven't thread basted a one since I found that method - so much easier & holds it in place nicely! Always enjoy seeing the lovely stitching you are working on - that embroidery is so sweet!

The embroidered block looks great. Getting those precuts centered on the forms can be hard. Looks like you are making progress even with the difficulties.

ReplyDeleteI lack the patience for hexies, though I love it when other people use them. Fiddly seam allowances would have me throwing things at the walls!

ReplyDeleteI hate it when the fabric is skimpy on my hexies. Sometimes a little dab of glue stick on the paper helps hold the fabric in place so it doesn't slip.
