I just happen to have a few of these kicking around. I bet you could have guessed that! Here are a few of my favourites.
Some selvages have interesting names, and some have fun designs, such as diamonds, puzzle pieces, and birds. Most of them have the cute little colour dots.
I didn't start out to collect selvages, but some of them were just too fun or pretty to throw them in the trash. Over the years I have made a few potholders for gifts. It's a quick and easy project and quilters love to receive them (but then hesitate to actually use them!)
My favourite selvage project that I have made so far is a little mat to go in the bottom of my Featherweight box.
And this is my very fancy storage system. I toss them in a plastic bin under my cutting table.
You can link up how you store your selvedges here.
Dear Kathy,
ReplyDeletecute little selvege projects, really love your storage system.
Greetings,Sylvia
Love seeing your projects! Your Featherweight box looks so pretty with that selvedge mat! And I love your system of storing selvedges...looks like mine!
ReplyDeleteSweet little selvedge projects. My system for saving selvedges? I just pin them to the corner of the closest wallhanging! That said, the truth is, I don't hang on to them for very long, as I pass them on to a selvedgy friend.
ReplyDeleteI love salvages.. and have been collecting them for awhile.. and Yes I store them pretty much the same way you do! I have made pin cushions, which makes each one unique. I have also used them for backgrounds in small art quilts. Would love to find more ways to use them!
ReplyDeleteThat little mat is so pretty it's a shame to put it in the bottom of a box. There again I wouldn't want to put a drippy mug on it. Guess who wouldn't use a selvedge potholder either...lol
ReplyDeleteThink I'd just sew them in strips .... like your first photo.... and hang them in a nice frame as a decorative reminder of past projects. I don't get a lot of selvedges as I buy mainly fat quarters and I always seem to get the one without the printed edge!
The selvadges now are just really pretty - not only the dots, but cute little patterns too. I save them, but I prefer to pass them on to someone else. And my storage method is a large zip lock bag - when full, I know it is time to mail it on.
ReplyDeleteI never think to save the selvadges... which is good because I really don't need to start another project!
ReplyDeleteThat's a great idea for your Featherweight!
ReplyDeleteI love selvedge projects, but have sworn not to go there myself. I save them and stuff them in an envelope to a friend when I have enough to make it worth sending. But, you know, with all of the tiny stuff I have been making lately, I don't end up with many selvedges. : )
ReplyDeleteGreat idea to make a mat for your FW box. Thanks for sharing that. I am following along with the selvage along and hope to get more inspired to use up my stash of selvedges.
ReplyDeleteI love using my selvedges but don't have time to do much with them. I keep them folded rather neatly in a rubbermaid shoe box :)
ReplyDeleteLove the mat for your sewing case.
ReplyDeleteMy selvages get sewn end to end and wrapped around my BIG selvage ball. I have a Mess of Selvages that have been given to me. I recently found my big tote of them while re-arranging my Quilt Zone. Gotta make something with them---but not this week!
ReplyDeleteSomeone gave away 3 full bags of selvedges at the freebie table at quilt guild last month. No, I didn't take any (I usually give mine away). I do have a drawer full, but don't know if I'll ever use them. I bought yardage of a great faux selvedge fabric. MUCH easier.
