My first quilt for the Scrap Squad is well underway. I have been sewing up a storm on my machine... or should I say making a dust storm? I had to take a break and give my machine some TLC. I cleaned out the bobbin area, replaced the needle, and gave the machine a good drink of oil.
(Two of my quilting friends recently confessed that they only change their needle when it breaks! Say what!?!?)
Here is my little plastic bin full of the necessities for some sewing time at a friend's house... weather permitting. As you can tell, my first Scrap Squad quilt will be made with bright spring colours and I can't wait to see how this all comes together! Today we are having temperatures nearing minus 30 C!
I change my needle after about 2-3 days of hard sewing. I love your colors, I am making a quilt in similar colors.
ReplyDeleteI'm bad about changing my needle but will do it today if I can find a surface to sew on! Lovely spring colors to combat those chilly temps.
ReplyDeleteI probably don't change my needle quilt often enough, but at least I do a lot better than I used to (I used to only change when the needle broke - honestly, I didn't know any better!). ;-)
ReplyDeleteI don't change my needle as often as I probably should but I am better about it then I used to be! that is a lot of link and dust in that machine! :)
ReplyDeletefun fun! I just had to give my machine some TLC too, it actually broke and wouldn't zig zag, hubby took it apart and found a screw missing and after shaking the machine upside down, found it and put it back but it was a pain...... I'm one of those non-needle changers too, need to to that TODAY!! really....
ReplyDeleteHow often to yo have to make something involving being on the scrap squad?
ReplyDelete-26 in my neighbourhood this morning but heading to guild for the day! Good luck with your quilt, it does look like it is going to be bright!!
ReplyDeleteI would be one of those Naughty Needle Neglecters :( Looking forward to seeing your Scrappy goodness. Janita
ReplyDeleteI just did a good cleaning, oiling and needle change on mine last night. She is purring like a kitten again.
ReplyDeleteI love cleaning the lint from my machine--is that weird?
ReplyDeleteOkay, I am always forgetting to change my needle, and I have packs and packs of replacements, so no excuses. My sewing time comes so sporadically that I often just don't even give a thought to how long I have been sewing on a particular needle. Sounds like there are a lot of us that could use a visit from the quilt police. : )
We had a speaker at guild who advised to only use sharps for piecing and quilting and not universal needles. I change mine often, usually after each project. Have fun with your scraps!
ReplyDeleteI am very steadfast with cleaning, oil, needles, etc.... You want to keep that machine humming - it needs to be petted and pampered.
ReplyDeleteWhat pretty fabrics you have there for your sewing day. I hope you get to your friend's house. It snowed here yesterday afternoon and overnight, so I got to experience snow for the first time. (I'm from Australia.) It's starting to melt, so time to sew. Keep warm....those temperatures are beyond diabolical!!!!!
ReplyDeleteThe Lint gets cleaned out a lot more often than my needle gets changed. If I know I'll be starting a BIG New Projec,t I change it to make sure it is good for the whole Project. Some say change it after each project. Looks like some 1000 Pyramid units or are they tri-recs??? Waiting and watching for reveal time.
ReplyDeleteMy machine tells me when it needs oil, and I always change the needle then. It is pretty often. Love your bright scraps.
ReplyDeleteNeither can we!!!
ReplyDeleteI clean my machine everytime I put a new bobbin in. As to changing the needle...I'm not telling.
ReplyDeleteI wouldn't have a clue how frequently I change the needle, but it is quite often. I can actually tell by the sound of the machine when it needs cleaning and/or a new needle. Congrats on being part of the Scrap Squad. I like your photo - you (and the quilt) look lovely.
ReplyDeleteMy machine starts skipping stitches when it's time for a new needle, so I always know when to change it. Hope you get to spend some happy stitching time with your friend.
