More than 4 years ago I started a dotty scraps project - read about it here.
The block pattern by Bonnie Hunter is called Carolina Chain, and was in the Quiltmaker issue in May/June 2010. Bonnie was working on her blocks during the last quiltcam, and I was reminded that I had some started too. I dug them out of storage and started cutting more pieces (I used 1.5" squares and strips).
And then I had lots of fun with the layout possibilities. I have narrowed it down to my two favorites.
I call this X's and O's. I would maybe put the X blocks in the middle and they would be surrounded by one border of the lighter colour O blocks.
This is the block layout that Bonnie is using with a light and a dark diagonal chain.
And yesterday Bonnie posted her layout idea on her blog - click here to see it.
Which of the layouts do you like better and why?
Linking up today over at Connie's...lots of projects to see over there!
I think I like the X's and O'x better although both are pretty. I like the idea of the X's in the center surrounded by O's. Sort of kisses surrounded by hugs. I love all of the colors you are using.
ReplyDeleteI would like to see the x & o... As suggested by Cathie, above.. I think it would give a different dimension to the quilt.. Good luck.
ReplyDeleteLooks like I make 3 who like the x and O layout. So sweet and especially with your colour choices...perfect for some little child!
ReplyDeleteMy preference is for the diagonal Xs. Perhaps because it is visibly more appealing. The Xs make for a more prominent design.
ReplyDeleteI like the last one better....don't know why, just do...sorry
ReplyDeleteI like the last one best, its the most graphic and WOW
ReplyDeleteI started making these blocks awhile back too, hmmm wonder where they are!
LOL

X's and O's get my vote. Nice colourful quilt you have there! Very cheerful!
ReplyDeleteI like Bonnie's layout on her blog post because the chain is so visible up and down the quilt. Gives order to the very scrappy look she does.
ReplyDeleteAll the layouts are fun, although I do like Bonnie's 'on-point'.
ReplyDeleteI don't have a favorite. Each layout is very pretty and if it was my quilt I would be happy with any of them, so I'm really helpful, huh? : )
ReplyDeleteMy eye keeps going up to the X & O layout - which is unusual because normally I'm all over a strong diagonal layout. This is going to be a fun quilt either way!
ReplyDeleteWhat fun blocks. I like the second layout. I think the blocks are allowed to breath and dance. More interest.
ReplyDeleteI love the first layout--I think your eye moves around the quilt more with this layout--just sayin'..nice project...hugs, Julierose
ReplyDeleteLove the colors in your quilt. I am gravitating to the X and O quilt but both layouts look great.
ReplyDeleteIt's been fun to see all the cute hidden things in Bonnie's blocks on her Quilt Cam. I'm still resisting. Maybe after the next Mystery is done. Gotta get my last few quilts on the quilt machine. It's Deadline time!
ReplyDeleteThere are so many colours and so much movement in the blocks. The steady light dark diagonals provide a rest for the eye - you know what to expect - slide to the right or slide to the left. The x's and o's creates a secondary pattern with the squares of colour in a larger size. The eyes movement is interrupted and the quilt isn't as restful. I also like Bonnies on point version but all those setting triangles!
ReplyDeleteI like the X and O one the best. It seems more organized. I love your color.
ReplyDeleteHow about Os and more Os for a dotty quilt? I like the first layout best, because it is an original version rather than the same layout as the original -- it makes it yours.
ReplyDeleteI'm thinking about using that pattern (larger squares) for my next Quilts of Valor quilt.
ReplyDeleteI didn't take the time to read all the comments but I've read some and I have to say Xs N Os too. When I look at a quilt to see the values, I remove my glasses. I see the second layout as too closed. To me, the chains are too close to each other and it looks locked, chained in, you see I mean. The first is more liberated. But that's just me. Love the cheerful fabric.
ReplyDeleteBoth versions are so pretty. Great fabrics!
ReplyDeleteI like the second one best ... Just appeals to me more visually.
ReplyDeleteI like the xs and os best . I really love the way the os look, and I like that there are different sections to the quilt.
ReplyDeleteI like both of them. However I think I like the look of the x & o's better because of the way design.
ReplyDeletex and y get my vote, such tiny blocks you will need masses to make a bed quilt
ReplyDeleteI like the Xs and Os as well. The diagonal would be lovely, but it would be more exciting and the unexpected to go the other direction. I love all the colors.
ReplyDeleteI like the X's and O's. The dark in the middle with the light as a border just looks better to my eyes.
