The Rainbow Scrap Challengers had a link up midway through the year, which was on Wednesday, but I didn't have time to get my projects organized for a post. I do know that many of my scrap projects have arrived at a decision point - whether to make more blocks or finish the quilt top?
One of these projects was my "Tied Up in a Knot" block collection. I sewed 12 of these Knot blocks in 2012 and loved making each and every one of them. The pattern is from the Quiltmaker's 100 blocks magazine (Issue #3) and each block has 56 squares that are 1.5" of the colour of the month.
When the 12 blocks were finished, they went into a box, and haven't been seen since! Very sad :(
The problem is that I want to hand quilt this, but in a "quilt-as-you-go" style. I haven't ever done this before with hand quilting. Does anyone have any tips for me? Is this going to work?
Also, I wanted to show you what I won for being part of the Rainbow Scrap Challenge - a luscious package of hand dyed fabric from Vicki Welsh! I am going to cut into them and make at least one block of each colour for all my scrappy projects. Thank you to Vicki for such a wonderful gift!
So more scrappy link ups at SoScrappy.

don't you just love them - I got a package of her "scraps" which are the best scraps I have ever gotten - now to plan something to use them in - I'm thinking stars
ReplyDeleteA long time ago I attempted quilt as you go. On the positive side it is portable. On the negative, I had a hard time adjoining seams to lay smooth and flat. I never completed the project. Congrats on winning such lovely hand-dyed fabrics.
ReplyDeleteYour blocks are beautiful! It looks like just the right size for a quilt to me. I don't see why "quilt as you go" should not work for individual blocks.
ReplyDeletegreat blocks Kathy...and nice win!!!!!
ReplyDeleteGorgeous blocks! Congrats on the win, looking forward to seeing the scrappy project you make with those.
ReplyDeleteLovely blocks. I've never done 'quilt as you go' so can't help you.
ReplyDeleteThe only challenge with quilt as you go might be getting a hoop on the individual blocks...but other than that get at it!!!
ReplyDeleteYou are so lucky...another win for you and your stash!!
I've never done QAYG by hand or machine. I'd never even heard of doing it by hand!
ReplyDeleteGorgeous hand dyed fabrics. Looks like they will fit right in with your pretty rainbow projects. : )
I have done a couple string quilts, as a quilt as you go...they turned out OK, not perfect because I had a wee problem getting it all to line up perfectly. Love your blocks so much...pretty, pretty!
ReplyDeleteI remember watching those blocks come to fruition during the 2012 RSC! Loved them then, can't wait to see how you finish them! I have never done quilt as you go, so have no insight to offer. Good luck with whatever you decide!
ReplyDeleteI'll take scrappy any day. Great Blocks in Rainbow colors. Congrats on winning the Hand Dyed Fabric. Will you pre-wash it or is it already heat set so the dyes don't run?
ReplyDeleteThose will make a great finish. I think the QAYG technique would work fine.
ReplyDeleteI made several quilt as you go projects over 25 years ago--I don't think I want to do that again. It was great while I was handquilting each one. However, I did want the quilting to flow evenly from block to block, so I still had to work on that after I'd spent a great deal of time getting the otherwise-quilted blocks together. (I may have been influenced by the fact that after it was together, I knew it had to have a border.) It ended up as a huge investment of time, and it would have gone quicker if I'd just assembled it before quilting it. I'd suggest doing something smaller with the technique, then making a rough estimate of how much time it would take to do your beautiful quilt. Also, I'll caution that that was my experience, and there are many people who do enjoy the method.
ReplyDeleteOh I'm coveting those Vicki Welsh fabrics, they really do look luscious.
ReplyDeleteYour knot blocks are really effective aren't they. So clever. And so productive.
I have never tried a quilt as you go project so I can't offer advice. The blocks are fabulous. The rainbow colors are perfect.
ReplyDeleteLove those blocks. Love 1.5 in squares. Now I'm on the hunt for the magazine
ReplyDeleteI love, love, love your knot blocks!! They are wonderful!
ReplyDeletethe blocks are looking great and yes will make a wonderfull hanging, sorry not done quilt as you go, have seen a demonstration but it looked very complicated to me
ReplyDeleteLove those knot blocks. Congratulations on winning the fabric. It's gorgeous xx
ReplyDeleteBeautiful colour blocks!
ReplyDeletegroetjes van Marijke
Congrats on the winning. Such beautiful colours in that package. I haven't tried quilt as you go yet so I can't help you but the blocks are lovely. It will be a great quilt.
ReplyDeleteKathy I was going to join rows together ( or two halves of a quilt ) using this method that I'd found online. There are several ways and I'll probably search them all out again when I am ready...but here is the link that I had saved.

So pretty! Love your pretty fabrics - lucky you for winning. I can't wait to see them in your pretty blocks.
ReplyDeleteLOVE your background fabrics!
ReplyDeleteIt sounds like quilt as you go would be wonderful, but I would hate having to put that all together when they were done. So, I just haven't gone there. Sorry, I know I am no help at all.
ReplyDeleteI'm so glad that you like the fabrics!
ReplyDeleteGosh I love your Tied in a Knot blocks and won't it look amazing all put together. Can't offer any tips as QAYG hand or machine wise -sorry.
ReplyDeleteWhat beautiful blocks. I don't how to QAYG. Sorry.
ReplyDeleteCONGRATULATIONS! Lucky you. Your fabrics are beautiful.
