The Rainbow Scrap Challengers had a link up midway through the year, which was on Wednesday, but I didn't have time to get my projects organized for a post. I do know that many of my scrap projects have arrived at a decision point - whether to make more blocks or finish the quilt top?
One of these projects was my "Tied Up in a Knot" block collection. I sewed 12 of these Knot blocks in 2012 and loved making each and every one of them. The pattern is from the Quiltmaker's 100 blocks magazine (Issue #3) and each block has 56 squares that are 1.5" of the colour of the month.
When the 12 blocks were finished, they went into a box, and haven't been seen since! Very sad :(
The problem is that I want to hand quilt this, but in a "quilt-as-you-go" style. I haven't ever done this before with hand quilting. Does anyone have any tips for me? Is this going to work?
Also, I wanted to show you what I won for being part of the Rainbow Scrap Challenge - a luscious package of hand dyed fabric from Vicki Welsh! I am going to cut into them and make at least one block of each colour for all my scrappy projects. Thank you to Vicki for such a wonderful gift!

ReplyDeleteA long time ago I attempted quilt as you go. On the positive side it is portable. On the negative, I had a hard time adjoining seams to lay smooth and flat. I never completed the project. Congrats on winning such lovely hand-dyed fabrics.
ReplyDeleteYour blocks are beautiful! It looks like just the right size for a quilt to me. I don't see why "quilt as you go" should not work for individual blocks.

I have done a couple string quilts, as a quilt as you go...they turned out OK, not perfect because I had a wee problem getting it all to line up perfectly. Love your blocks so much...pretty, pretty!

ReplyDeleteI'll take scrappy any day. Great Blocks in Rainbow colors. Congrats on winning the Hand Dyed Fabric. Will you pre-wash it or is it already heat set so the dyes don't run?
ReplyDeleteThose will make a great finish. I think the QAYG technique would work fine.
ReplyDeleteI made several quilt as you go projects over 25 years ago--I don't think I want to do that again. It was great while I was handquilting each one. However, I did want the quilting to flow evenly from block to block, so I still had to work on that after I'd spent a great deal of time getting the otherwise-quilted blocks together. (I may have been influenced by the fact that after it was together, I knew it had to have a border.) It ended up as a huge investment of time, and it would have gone quicker if I'd just assembled it before quilting it. I'd suggest doing something smaller with the technique, then making a rough estimate of how much time it would take to do your beautiful quilt. Also, I'll caution that that was my experience, and there are many people who do enjoy the method.

I have never tried a quilt as you go project so I can't offer advice. The blocks are fabulous. The rainbow colors are perfect.

Congrats on the winning. Such beautiful colours in that package. I haven't tried quilt as you go yet so I can't help you but the blocks are lovely. It will be a great quilt.
