As I was quilting the last border on my July UFO, I discovered that the backing is about 1" too short on one end. I knew I was cutting it close, but sheeeesh! The line of stitching at the top is stitched at the edge of the quilt top. Ugh.
I interrupted my quilting to add an extra strip to the backing, making it long enough to cover the edge of stitching, and went back to quilting.
And then there was a second interruption. I had to do some surgical repair on Granddog Max's favorite friends. They don't seem to mind the stitching on their heads!
Here they are - good as new!
Both are missing their ears, which are Max's favorite things to chew!
Okay... back to quilting!!
No more distractions!
Oh my
ReplyDeleteWhat is this first comment.
You are nearly there...... Keep working.......
I frequently have to do some repairs for my grands' stuffies ... unfortunately, they're a little more discriminating than Max so I hand stitch so the stitching isn't visible. ;-)
ReplyDeleteMax's friends don't look the least bit upset at having to get some stitches! The pink stuffie actually looks like he is quite happy about the situation! You are almost there! Keep sewing!
ReplyDeleteI would be saying more than sheeeesh to myself. Medical attention to Max's toys was indeed a healing distraction.
ReplyDeleteOuch on the quilt, been there!! not fun! and poor stuffies, can you make fake ears for them and attach? not that they would last long..
ReplyDeleteWhat great photos of your granddog's friends in the machine! I hope it wasn't too much work to extend your backing. What a pain! But the top fabrics look wonderful -- so cozy!
ReplyDeleteThat's the Pits when that happens Kathy. Hasn't happened to me because I pin baste my quilts. But today I had to take our a block in the quilt top I was constructing because one of the fabrics had a hole in it! Fortunately, I had a spare block to slot it, but like you, I had a quiet little rant. I do like that quilt you are working on. It will be nice to see it finished.
ReplyDeleteFunny, I over allow backing when I send things off to the long armer, but I really cut it close when I do them myself. Haven't been on the minus side yet, but sometimes I sweat a lot! Oh, poor stuffies!!
ReplyDeleteThat happens to all of us sooner or later. Glad you caught it before you had to unquilt anything. You are so close to a finish!
ReplyDeleteLove Max's toys! They look well loved.
I had to add batting recently with a quilt on my frame. After I, again, said things about the quilter (me) I added a batting strip and quilted away. After it was quilted and bound you couldn't tell there had been anything wrong. It's just the name of the game: quilting.
ReplyDeleteOh Max...better to repair his chew toys than let him find something yummier to chew on in your sewing room!! ;)
ReplyDeleteI do cut it close when I am quilting too, haven't got caught yet!!Never say never though. Good luck getting your UFO done this week.
I've dragged a half pin basted sandwich to my machine to make it bigger too! Embarrassing but not reason for abandonment! We can't give our dog stuffed toys because he immediately murders them. Max is lucky!
ReplyDeleteAt least it was a fixable problem! But frustrating when you have to interrupt at the quilting stage to make those adjustments.
ReplyDeleteMaybe it is high time Max learned to do his own repair work. Do you think he could learn to treadle? : )
Looks like a Spammer got through. I have had this happened before as well- to come up short on a Backing. It's even harder when it is on a Frame, I can assure you! Lots of Un-Pinning. Makes those Red Snappers at $60 look pretty good to me. You are sooo close, one more day. Here's hoping for no more Distractions
ReplyDeleteAlmost there! Like my Mom would say, "The last big push!" I am in a pumped up state of anticipation waiting to see the finished project!
ReplyDeleteWhat a great Grandma you are to fix the toys! Sometimes those necessary breaks help us get that finish. Hope you are onto some binding today.
ReplyDeleteI have always been afraid of having my backing too short, at least I know it happens to other people too! My cats always chew the tails off of their toys.
ReplyDeleteFunny to see those poor "friends" under the sewing arm! We do sometimes have to use our machines for non-quilty distractions :)
ReplyDeleteOne inch! At least it was an fairly easy fix, and you didn't have to un-quilt. Max's friends look very happy after their brain surgery!
ReplyDeleteUgh! Hate when that happens! I like your solution. My Max has a bunny toy and he only chews on one the ears not the other. I think he may be OCD!
ReplyDeletewhat a blow being short of backing but you soon solved that and good to see the toys are repaired and not leaking stuffing everywhere
ReplyDeleteLOL !!! Poor little DEAF toys ;)
ReplyDeleteGlad you were able to fix the backing problems - and it's nice to hear I'm not the only one who sometimes has problems like that! Do you think the first toy under the machine looks like he is grimacing while being sewn?!!
ReplyDeleteI always worry my backing won't be big enough, glad you were able to fix that glitch relatively easily.
