I am stuck on block # 36 of my Votes For Women sampler.
Why, you ask?
Because it's applique.
I considered skipping this block, but I really do want a "Sunbonnet Sue" in my quilt. It is such a classic block.
And I really want to learn to like applique!
Have you ever seen "The Sun Sets on Sunbonnet Sue" quilt??! You can read more about the subversive messages in this quilt, and learn about the significance of this block over at the Quilt Index - click here.
Best of luck with your appliqué. I like to do a little glue stick basting with freezer paper on top. A cheeters way to be sure, but I never quite got the hang of needle turn.
ReplyDeleteI think the worst part of applique is the prep work!! Looks like you are well on your way! Hey, praying for your brother here...he has a trach, I think I saw?
ReplyDeleteCome on...you like hand work! Applique is fun and relaxing as hand quilting is.The only issue is when pieces are too small but it doesn't look like you have that issue here.
ReplyDeleteCome on girl ...get r done!!!
I have a beginner tip/suggestion for prepping your applique' pieces.
ReplyDeleteIron the freezer paper to the back of the block. Spray heavy starch into a cup and apply it to the seam allowances with a Q-tip. Iron the damp edges to the back of the piece. Remove the freezer paper and you have neatly turned edges without any glue.
I applaud you for staying the course and working on this block even though it's not your favorite technique! I'm sure it will turn out great!
I'm not fond of applique either, but will do it in a sampler if it is only one block, but boy do I have to suck it up to make myself do it. Looks like you are most of the way there. Good luck with the rest.
ReplyDeleteToo funny--I just did some applique, too, and it isn't my thing at all!
ReplyDeleteI'd never seen that Sunbonnet Sue quilt. Yikes! : )
Good for you to stick to it. I substituted a block for Sunbonnet Sue. You'll do a great job, I am sure!
ReplyDeleteI did 2 Sunbonnet Sue blocks for a group exchange this summer. They aren't that hard. I cheated, and stitched them down with a blanket stitch.
ReplyDeleteI love everything SunBonnet Sue. They aren't hard. You could even use visible. Glad to see you are trying.
ReplyDeleteI like to appliqué but not a whole lot which is why most of my appliqué blocks are still blocks, not quilts.
ReplyDeleteGood for you for trying...I bet when you have it done you will be very happy!
