In Your Words

Welcome to the "In Your Words" blog hop! If you are new here, take a look around and see what's going on in Kathy's quilty world.
I am excited to share my "Words to Live By" quilt.
About two years ago I learned to sew letters using Tonya's  wonderful book called Word Play. I was inspired by the Virtues Quilt over at Nifty Quilts to learn how to make words from the Virtues Project list of words. To read more about the construction process of the words, and the decisions made along the way, click here
In my overly optimistic mind, I envisioned sewing all the virtues, but then lost interest in this project as I do "from time to time" (really laughing out loud!) When I saw the "In Your Words" blog hop invitation, I decided that this would be just the incentive I needed to finish my virtues quilt and here it is!

I put the 6 words I had sewn together with some scrappy hearts, and a few triangles here and there just for fun.
This quilt was made in a totally "liberated" way - no patterns, points chopped off, no logical construction, no thought given to colour planning, and nothing lines up very well. The process of sewing it together was SO FUN! And I feel happy when I look at it, so it's my favorite quilt so far!
I machine quilted it last night as part of a quilting demo for the quilt guild...yep...nothing like finishing a project at the last minute!  That's how life goes around here!
Well, actually "finished" is a relative term for a quilter! The binding isn't actually on the quilt...let's just say it's near the quilt!  And the quilt was whispering something about some embellishments and some hand stitching to add, so I've realized this isn't "finished yet".
A big thanks to Madame Samm over at Sew We Quilt for all the fun blog hops, and to Linda for organizing us!

  3. Love your word quilt that you finished (almost) with determination and joyfulness, Sometimes you just have to honor your own creativity and respect your inner quilty muse and trust that your unplanned quiltiness will be perfect in it's own way ... :) Pat

  5. That is a great quilt. Love how you put the words together. Really want to make one too, sometime, lol!

  6. I also consider a top as a finish even though it may have two more finushes (the quilting and the binding, lol!). A top is not considered a UFO !! Only the blocks in bags or pieces waiting to be blocks are UFOs . SO glad you threw rules to the wind and sewed like a free spirit and loved it! Love your word project quilt and the words within!

  10. You have indeed made a very awesome quilt. It should be very fun to see how you will finish with it, concerning embellishment and more. You have gotten me inspired to try to this method sewing letters.
Thank you for sharing your wonderful project.

  12. Awesome incentive quilt! Yes, a little more 'bling' is needed before the binding embraces it.

  14. Hi Kathy great quilt. Of course it's finished it has been quilted. Embellishments and binding can be added later.... but not too much later as it would be a shame for it to get lost in a pile of other projects.

  16. Aren't you glad this is what got you in gear to get this lovely project to this point? I love the colors, the letters, and most especially the sentiment. I haven't tried letters yet and your project certainly makes me want to do that. What a great project! I can hear the lack of tension and thrill in your finger tips even with the "rush" to get it finished. A job well done! Thank you very much for sharing your creativity with us.

  20. I really like your quilt a lot. I tis very refreshing to see quilts made without a pattern. I get tired of looking at all the perfect looking pattern ones. These kinds are teh best made one step at a time whne Inspiration hits and you just get that feeling of where you want to go next with it.

  43. great job -- I have an all finished (but the binding) catagory in my craft room as well. I did get a neat binding tool that uses the backing folded over and that 's helping decrease the amount of time I spend putting ths off called the quick easy mitered binding tool. Works great for smaller projects but can be used for a larger quilt as well.
