Design Wall Monday #43

I finally have some progress to show on my red letter quilt along, which was inspired by Word Play Quilts. I showed it on my design wall blog post 3 weeks ago and although it doesn't look much different from that post, it is very different!

It took me this long to get all the bits of sashing around the 32 various sized asterisks blocks, then join them together to be the border to fit around the letters. I am very happy with how it looks now, I am just not sure yet if it is finished, or if this quilt wants to be bigger?! Any suggestions?!?

  1. I love the colors, and I love the simplicity. I think the way it is, lets the letters be the focus. Great job.

  2. I love the quilt, Kathy. Wo much shimsy and great colours. I don't think you need to add a thing.

  3. Is it "big enough" fo its intended purpose? If so bind it with a dark bright print & call her done! If not, then I don't have any strong opinions on what to do next. I just feel rather strongly about the dark bright binding.

  5. I think this quilt is fabulous just the way it is with dark binding or it would be great if you added another border.

I know that whoever gets this is going to be very happy with it!

  6. It looks so neat, love the asterisks around it! If you want it bigger maybe just add a border or two.

  8. I agree that it looks great just as it is but with a darker binding. If it isn't big enough for it's intended purpose then a darker border would look great too.

  9. If this is a wall hanging, it is perfect. If it is to be a bed quilt, I would put a small plain border on it, maybe the same color as the binding. But I really like it the way it is. It looks great (and like a lot of work).

  10. Stupendous Kathy! I like it the way it is now. And, I agree it needs a bright border in an intense color. Like hot pink, or bright red, royal blue... You've done a wonderful job. Some day I'll do letters and then astricks too. Maybe words would look cute around my doggie quilt which has been on the back burner for years. Bonnie.

  11. I'm chiming in with others, I think it looks fabulous. It only needs a border if you want it to be bigger.

  14. Love those tiny asterisk blocks. I'm going to have to try some! I love your quilt just as is. With a border it'll be so cute!

  15. What a happy quilt! I'd float the asterisks (asterese?) with a narrow white border to match the one on the other side of them, then either border or bind with a vivid dark color (thereby saying what everyone else is saying.)

    Your quilt makes me smile!

  16. I love your inner border with the fussy cut wave so I definitely would love to see a fun outer border or two with that same kind of feel.

  17. The quilt is in charge, apparently, so let it tell you how much bigger it wants to be :) It looks terrific. You got those asterisks lined up beautifully, Kathy.

  18. I'm with Connie. I like the inner border fabric if you have enough to use it for the binding I'd just go with that. I am planning on playing some more with the Wonky letters before Christmas... I have to wait until the family leaves- no peeking allowed.

  21. Are you out of the focus fabric? I simple row or scrap squares around the edge would be nice, of course a scrappy binding would probably have the same effect. Does it need to be bigger for size?

  22. It's OUTSTANDING! I love it. It's terrific. I don't think it needs another border. Use a dark binding, or a bright one, or a mix of lots of brights. It's great. It's perfect. It doesn't need anything else.

  23. I love it! Maybe a tiny border around the outside edge to finish it off?

  24. This is such a fun quilt!! I think if you do a dark binding, similar in color to the inner border around the alphabet, it'll be enough. Such a great piece!!! :)

  25. You've had enough people confirm what I would say. I'll just tell you that it looks really great!!

  26. I could see a scrappy brights binding (or a single pretty skinny outer stop border of the light background, just to let that outer edge breathe a little, with scrappy bright binding).

    It is WONDERFUL!!!

    CONGRATS!!!

  27. What a great quilt. The asterisks are amazing and I love the way that even the letters are pieced from different fabrics. I love it how it is, but I'll bet I'll still love it if it needs more for your purpose or for size.
