Civil War Wednesday

It has been a while since I posted some blocks for my civil war quilt. I have finished 2 more blocks and am working along at a snail's pace but enjoying the sewing, so that's all that matters.
This is block #29 Railroad Crossing (love it) and #31 Empty Spools (do not love it...too clunky looking with all the other wonderful pieced blocks). I skipped block #30 since I'm only including the pieced blocks in my project. I am looking forward to using some of the new reproduction fabrics I purchased last weekend in the next blocks I sew.

  1. I love that center floral in your first block. It is a nice block.
I concur on two points--If I had sewn the CW blocks (which I had every intention of doing, but have finally conceded defeat), I would have only made the pieced ones. And I have never been a huge fan of the spool block, even when four are place in one block. I was making an Eleanor Burns Sampler once and when I came to the spool block I went to Quilter's Cache and found another pattern to sub for it. Sometimes someone does something clever with it that catches my eye, but most of the time I pass on it.

  2. I like your first block, but I would applique something in the spool block.

  3. blue my fave...love it. I feel the same way about spool blocks...they always seem 'off' somehow to me.

  4. I'm behind reading your blog, but you've been very busy, as usual. :-)
The latest civil war blocks are wonderful, as is Carolina Christmas. It's a shame you spent so much time getting into Michigan. The charms are really cute, though. Love the Baptist fan quilting on your mystery quilt from Judy. There's been an awful lot of the Twister stuff around here. I finally caved and bought the itty bitty one.

  5. Nice work on the Railroad Crossing block!!! I found the Spool block too chunky too, so I made a four spool block, it just looked more in keeping with the other blocks!!!!

  6. You chose wonderful fabrics for your blocks. I agree that the spool block does look a little oversize in comparison. I like the idea of making it a 4 spool instead. I have been thinking about spending a bit of time to learn to applique.
