My first task was to stop struggling to match up the seams between the blocks and accept it as it was - that was a big step toward finishing this top. Amazingly I had stored the extra purple fabric with the blocks, and was able to add a narrow purple border.
Then I sewed the string borders and these 4 corner blocks, added them to the quilt.
Ta da... the spiderweb quilt is a finished top measuring 67" square.
Now I am wondering if the string borders are too wide at 6 1/2" and do they take away from the spiderweb blocks?
I am wondering if I should trim it to 4"?
What do you think?

I don't think they are two wide. The quilt is fabulous and from the photo the points look like they match perfectly.
ReplyDeleteI do think they overpower the quilt a bit I would consider cutting them in half or maybe leave 2 inches for the inner, adding a solid border between them and then adding the rest back.
ReplyDeleteI think the border needs to be cut down. The quilt is beautiful with just the Dresden plates. I like the idea of a solid border although you have put so much work into this that it's probably not worth all the extra work.
ReplyDeleteI do think the border overpowers it a bit, but I think you should wait to decide if you want to cut it back until it's quilted and laid on a bed - it might not seem overpowering once it's on a bed because the webs will be on top and the border will hang over hopefully :) It's much harder to add more on later than cut it back before binding :)

ReplyDeleteI don't think they are too wind, and besides, If you trim it off, then you will have to figure out something to do with the two inch trimmings.

ReplyDeleteGreat finish! I have recebtkt given up trying to line up my strips in my May UFO, so I can relate totally--amazing how much faster it moves along that way! Regarding your borders, I don't think trimming them a bit would hurt, but I think they may just look overpowering now because you don't have a binding to finish it off. With a darker type binding to frame them and give them a bit of "closure" I think it will look just fine. I'd test out a bit of a darker fabric under it to see how it would look before I'd trim anything. And also consider that the quilting will shrink it up a tad and change the look too! Congrats on your lovely finish!

ReplyDeleteLooking beautiful! What a great way to finish off the web, with all those strings :) I think once it is quilted and bound and wrapped around someone, the width of the border will be as perfect as can be.

ReplyDeleteIt looks just great...the borders do look a little wide when it is spread out flat but once it is on the bed I think it will look just fine.
