Rainbow Scrap Challenge Quilt Top

One of the primary ways I sew scrap quilts is following along with the Rainbow Scrap Challenge. Every month our host Angela gives us a colour to focus on for that month. It's a great way to keep scraps organized and constantly being sewn into projects.

This month I am so happy to have finished one of my rainbow quilt tops - a waffle project (non edible!)

This project was inspired by Nann and I started sewing waffles in June 2020. This is the perfect project to use up 1.5" squares and strips.

There are a lot of seams in this quilt top which made pressing the blocks and rows a challenge.

And now for the age old question - does it need a border? It doesn't need to be bigger but does it need a frame?!?

  1. That's so pretty, Kathy! Love how you've laid it out with darks flowing to lights and back again. I think it's perfect without a border!

  2. I wasn't sure I liked that block but now that I see it in a quilt it's great, and a great scrapper! I'll keep this in mind for a future RSC. And I don't think it needs a border.

  3. Love the look! A small border would help stabilize all the seams around the edges. Just a thought ...

  4. This is so lovey--the only reason I can see for a little border is that it would make it easier to add binding--avoiding all those edges...

Anyway--this is so beautiful...I am thinking of doing a waffle, too
[but I am still waffling! hahaha]. Its either that or a lego-type one...
Did you enjoy the process on this one? Just wondering--if you are like me, certain blocks/quilts fall easily into your comfort zone and are fun to make...

  7. Either way - or a nice black border to stop all the colors. Hugs

  9. I think it is perfect without a border also. The binding should frame it nicely.

  10. Absolutely gorgeous! I love the rainbow gradation of colors across the quilt. No border needed.

  11. If you use a dark border, maybe black, it will work as a frame without the added size or work. This quilt is great as it is!

  12. Non-edible! You crack me up. It's lovely already but I would go with a border, black or white but IMHO needs to be peppered with little specks of colours. Enjoy! ;^)

  13. Lovely quilt, love the way you have organised the different coloured blocks . Don’t think it needs a border but I can see the sense of anchoring all the ends of the blocks with a dark narrow border as other people have suggested.

  15. I love this top, Kathy! So much fun. And if it were me, I’d put a frame on it, but it’s just a personal preference.

  16. Congrats on getting your Waffle blocks transformed into a quilt top, Kathy! Best of luck with the borders. That's never my favorite part of the process, but some quilts demand them.
