March Table Scraps and Riley Blake Update

Last month's placemat in the RSC colour of yellow is completely made of scraps from my Blockheads II quilt. I pulled some triangles out of the box and sewed them together. There were some adorable little HST blocks that couldn't find a spot to land so they were voted off. And there was a cute little yellow star for the centre.

The quilting was all straight lines with the walking foot. It is minimally quilted and was boring to do, but it fit the project.

One more placemat to add to this year's collection.

I am a bit behind in sewing the Riley Blake Challenge since I'm only making 2 blocks a month in the RSC colour of the month (and the patterns are being releasing faster than that).

A funny thing happened this week. My goal was to finish the 2 yellow sampler blocks for March. I forgot that I had skipped block #3, and having sewn 4 blocks, I thought I should make block #5 next. And so I did.

Block #5 is called Sundial by Christopher Thompson. When I put it on the design wall, I realized that I had already sewn this block pattern in teal!

When I was sewing the block it did not feel familiar at all, even though I had already sewn it! It does look different with the value placement, doesn't it? I didn't realize what I had done until I took this photo. Anyway, this sampler quilt will not have block #3 (which was a leaf) and will have two of block #5!

I have one more block to finish up yellow month and next up is pink!

Linking up to the Rainbow Scrap Challenge.

  1. The yellow and gray table mat turned out beautifully! It's always nice when you make an error work in your favor. Your yellow block works really well with the others.

  3. I love the gray and yellow together to make your placemat, Kathy! That's a really pretty combination. It is so interesting to see your Sundial blocks in both yellow and aqua. They do look very different, but both pretty!

  5. Great job on the placemat. I love yellow and grey together. The little star in the middle is a cute surprise. Love it. Sundial is very different from its counterpart in teal. Some blocks get another name just because the values are not placed in the same place so your teal block could very well be a variant from Sundial (which I love btw). Enjoy! ;^)
