Playing With Scraps

Every quilter knows that once in a while it's essential to just play with a box of scraps! I needed that this week - no thinking required, just sewing pieces together. Any size strips, all kinds of fabrics.

This is my sewing area with the scrap project under the needle, and a leader-ender Easy Breezy block on the bed of the machine.

My goal was to create scrappy blocks measuring 3.5" x 9.5". I cut strips in the approximate size using scissors, and sewed them together and then trimmed them to the same size. This is what I have come up with so far.

I'm not sure what the layout will be or how many blocks I will make yet, but I am quite concerned that for some unknown reason the scrap bin does not seem less full?

  4. Scrap bins never look like they go down. Your scrappy strips look great and it will make a beautiful quilt. Crumb quilting is something new we play with because there are no rules, just sew and see where it goes? Tried it years ago, but was too rigid in my thinking then, it came to a screeching halt then. Maybe now that the thinking bungee has been relaxed it will work and flow better?

  5. Your blocks look like they would work with a couple different quilts in "No Scraps Left Behind" book by Amanda Jean Nyberg...but of course you could make every quilt in her book and still have a full basket...because scraps attract friends.

  6. love playing with scraps and I need to do more of it to clear out some of this fabric! I have so many boxes and canvas cubes full of fabric it is crazy - one wonders at times how many quilts can be made from them

  9. I love the fact that as quilters we have so many options for playing with fabric! And the resulting quilts find good homes.

  11. Such a fun project! And it’s against the will of the quilting gods that the scrap bin volume ever decreases. LOL!

  12. My scrap bins never diminish in size. I swear they breed in there and just keep growing. If you find a solution to that issue, please let us all know. :)

  13. As I was reading your post and the comments that followed, I suddenly had this thought run through my (squirrely) mind, "What if I took all my scraps and did a Marie Kondo, dumping them all into one gigantic pile?" Then my obsessive/compulsive tendency took hold and said, "Bad Idea". I'd start sorting them again and might never actually get back to using anything in my stash.

  17. Yes sometimes a quilter just has to play! Funny how that scrap bin never seems to empty!!
Check out my quilter friend, she is starting a quilt along. Quilt along with Carla on facebook or her blog Quilting by the River. There is a $10 fee to play along but something fun to do.
