Design Wall Monday

Are you sewing along with the Grassy Creek mystery or are you cheering from the sidelines? Some people like to collect the mystery pattern and make the quilt once they know what the design will be like and can pick the fabrics they want. I like to "live on the edge" with my mystery quilting. It's the process that is so fun for me and I don't really care about how my fabric choices turn out in the finished quilt

And sometimes you get a spectacular quilt, like the 2013 Quiltville mystery called Celtic Solstice, and I called my version Angel Solstice. So beautiful!

I am keeping up with this year's mystery so far (making half the units each step). I enjoyed watching the 1947 black and white movie called The Bishop's Wife while I sewed some part 4 blocks.

On the weekend before Christmas my local quilt guild hosted a Saturday zoom sew along and there was a "break out room" for folks who are making this year's Quiltville mystery . Here we are working on whatever step each of us were sewing.

So fun to sew and chat with guild friends we haven't been able to meet with since February, and to meet new friends!

Let's face it - how many other ways can you have an adventure during covid lockdown?!?

Some of my part 4 pieces are on the design wall today and I enjoyed playing with different arrangements. This was a fun block to make.

This is how I am storing the blocks as we go along. This is the packaging that new bed sheets come in. You can see through the clear plastic, it has a zipper with a pink tassel, and it is the perfect 'free' storage container for mystery pieces.

  1. Good work with your BH. I’m just printing them atm. I still need to finish the borders on FROLIC

  2. I like watching from the sidelines! Angel solstice was a real beauty, but I also really like your colour choices for the latest mystery. The bishops wife is one of my all time favourite films, especially the ice skating scene!

  3. I have that movie on DVD, one of my annual watches. Great progress on your quilt elements. It is fun to sew together on Zoom, better to see some faces and have some quilty interaction.

  4. Your guild is being very clever by doing Zoom. I really miss my guild. During the summer we met outdoors in a part, but now that winter is here we are just "on hold" again. We have a lot of elderly gals who are not comfortable doing anything using much technology.

I'm sewing along too - for the fun and excitement of a mystery. But for now I'm only making 1 set of each clue because I did switch 2 of the colors and am worried that they won't work out.

  5. Love The Bishop's Wife! Good choice. :)
Your Angel Solstice is gorgeous. I am one who waits until the reveal--but I have only made 2 or 3. I have too many UFOs and not enough quilting time. I admire those of you who can take on these mysteries at a time when I am barely keeping my nose above water.

  6. Your quilt is absolutely beautiful!! Those zoom phone calls are wonderful. We used it on Christmas Day for the whole family to get to see each other and visit. Hugs,

  7. I'm sitting out this year's Quiltville mystery as Frolic is languishing in a box and I'm thinking of repurposing the blocks parts I've done so far. I need to finish some of the many mysteries and QALs that are sitting here before I start any more.

  8. I'm watching your progress and printing out the patterns. I still want to finish Unity and all my other sewalongs first!

  9. I'm one of those that would rather see the finished quilt before I start. Your finished quilt is beautiful!

  10. Printing the clues, but waiting for the solution this time. I started a needle turn project called Celestial Dream at mid June and am making myself finish this. Focus, focus I keep telling myself!

  11. Celtic Solstice was a lovely Mystery. After a break for a few years I am doing Grassy Creek.

  12. I'm just collecting patterns. I do not need another UFO. Ringo Lake is still in a box in the basement! Not a fan of orange, as it turns out.

  13. I agree, some years the mysteries work out beautifully, some years not so much. You've made good progress on Grassy Creek. I'm way behind, but that's OK, I'll finish it eventually. Meanwhile it's such fun to piece and see what comes next.
