Design Wall Monday

I accidentally started a new project on the weekend. It started with trying to clean up the mess in my quilt studio, and we all know how that goes!

While cleaning, I found a box that was given to me at winter quilt retreat by my friend Gillian. The box was full of 1.25" x 6" strips that were mostly lights and a few medium darks thrown in. I had forgotten about this gift and started taking the strips out of the box to admire them. I think these pieces were originally cut as part a pieced border because there was one long strip of them sewn together.

Of course I became smitten with these strips and several hours later (with no cleaning done) I had decided to sew 7 strips together to make these 6" x 6" blocks. I'm thinking about using this layout. These 16 blocks will only make a quilt that is 22" square, so I need to cut more strips and keep sewing to make it a useable size. What a great distraction!

And that is how UFO's are born!

  3. LOL...I know the feeling! But, it is technically a UFO because it was sitting there not being worked on :-). Now it's being used up!!

  4. It definitely is squirrel season in every quilter's world it seems, and it must be a good thing! This would make such a sweet baby quilt with some additional blocks and/or borders. Love the soft sweet fabrics.

  5. What fun to un-earth this lovely find for you!!;)))
I love how these low volume blocks are coming out...so pretty...

Our backyard is so full of frantic squirrels right now--darting, digging, unearthing --who knows what-- who knows where????--huh!!

They seem to be able to take over sewing rooms too, it seems... hahaha

  6. SQUIRREL for sure!!Very pretty scraps and I like how you sewed them together...since you have to cut more, why not go a little darker for the next round around and then an even darker round outside of that. Think how Bonnie Hunter did the hourglass leader and ender the other year! Just a thought.

  8. Such a slippery slope -- and sliding down it is such fun! Enjoy finding more low-volume prints from your stash. Cleaning can wait.

  12. Start-itis is an incurable condition that produces quilts :)

  13. There's nothing wrong with starting a new project or two. Especially as those strips were already cut and just waiting for you.

  16. LOL Oh how I can relate, but what a wonderful "find" and a fun project. I love it and look forward to your additions to it. Happy day! Cleaning can wait. (SO that's how my room stays a mess!)

  18. So pretty. But why make a UFO, when you could bind what you have and call it a table topper/

  19. But it's such a LOVELY UFO! I've got a drawer full of leftover strips that I cut for my pineapple log cabin quilt, so I've been collecting ideas for how I could use them up. My only criteria is that whatever I make with them, I need to mix in some other colors and do something totally different from a log cabin!
