Progress is continuing on my Churn Dash/Nine Patch project. I decided it might be fun to sew this quilt top together by sewing the blocks into sets of 4, instead of joining long rows. Here are the first 9 blocks on the design wall. Will I have the courage to sew them together randomly? Or will I need to lay them out on the design wall to balance the colours? I'm thinking about throwing caution to the wind, putting these blocks in a brown paper bag, pulling them out and sewing them together... eeeekkks!
What would you do?!?

Looking Good!
ReplyDeleteBrown paper bag method, but keeping an eye generally on what is happening.
ReplyDeleteI've been emboldened by my recent random scrap project, so I'd try the paper bag! You can always pull a different one from the bag if you happen to get two of the same fabric together :)
ReplyDeleteI would sew the blocks into foursies randomly. Then once they are all done..I would lay the blocks out to make sure the colours were spread all over. So a little carefree with some caution!
ReplyDeleteYou picked a fun layout for your Churn Dash quilt!
ReplyDeleteI tried the paper bag method once, I over think the process so it was difficult for me. I admire your free spirit.
I find it's easier to piece four blocks and then rows -- most of the time, at any rate. I'd just put 'em together. You'll go crazy trying to balance the colors. Random placement makes the viewer work to see similarities.
ReplyDeleteI find that I am never satisfied with the design wall so i moving it around until it is the same as if I had just drawn it out of a bag
ReplyDeleteI don't think I could do the paper bag method. I'm much better at doing scrappy now, but still have lapses where I have to match things. OTOH, when I do lay blocks out and rearrange to distribute colors, etc, I invariably find I wind up with the same color or print nearby.
ReplyDeletePat
I would never have thought of making 4 patches first but love the idea. Go for it!
ReplyDeleteOMGosh, I'm laughing so hard right now. My friend called me one time yelling to get out of her head. When I asked why she said she's trying to quilt scrappy and all she hears is me telling her to put her fabrics into a bag and just reach in and pull one out and sew it down. She is still trying to be a super scrappy quilter but really it isn't happening. :)
ReplyDeleteSo I say, use the bag!!! I love this setting.
I agree with the majority - grab bag for the 4sies then play to get things spread out. It will look great, don't worry.
ReplyDeleteHave fun sewing them together. It's fun to do the paper bag trick.
ReplyDeleteI have never done the paper bag thing and probably wouldn’t survive if I tried. But if you can do it, more power to you. I can only do random when it is carefully planned (oxymoron intended). :)
ReplyDeleteRandom?
ReplyDeleteThat would be too hard for me to do.
And as for sewing four blocks together instead od long rows, sounds great. Why have I never thought of that.
Brown paper bag method sounds like a lot of fun! What a great idea.
ReplyDeleteI say go for the brown paper bag!
ReplyDeleteWhat you've got up there looks pretty good. There's no area that jumps out at me, so I'd just sew that lot together and add on to it. It's looking really good.
ReplyDeleteI don't think you would go wrong setting your blocks using either method. The churn dashes have such variety and the nine patches pull things together.
ReplyDeleteVery pretty blocks, it's going to come together beautifully. I don't do random/chance layouts very well at all. I'd have to line them up before I started sewing.
ReplyDeleteHi Kathy,
ReplyDeleteI'm afraid if I did the paper bag method, I would be seam ripping something later to move a few blocks around. But it sure would save time, and in the large scheme of life.......these decisions are pretty small. So I say do it! Let us know if you are happy with the results. Thanks for linking with Design Wall Monday, I appreciate you. Judy
