When you are sewing a mystery quilt, you never know what you are making, so picking colours is sometimes challenging. Some people are hesitant to sew mystery quilts in case they end up disliking the quilt. But I am happy to donate quilts that I don't love to worthy causes. Mostly I am just happy to be using up leftover fabric scraps.
But this mystery quilt, I really like! It demanded to be an octagonal shaped quilt, which is not really useable for bed quilts. I really like the on point orientation instead of straight set for these blocks. I'm going to quilt it first, and then trim the edges of those black squares which will then become triangles, and bind it with black, for a very dramatic tabletopper.
I also like that 1) it used up lots of scraps from my Swoon quilt, and 2) I did not buy anything to make this quilt. I plan to use leftover batting scraps, machine quilt with a dense free motion design, and finish it by the end of the month. Is it doable???!

Can't sleep, I should be trimming my Quiltville Mystery parts so I can assemble more blocks. Instead I'm checking in to see what everyone is working on. The Bumblebee colors are great in this quilt. Good idea for an Octaganol Table topper.

ReplyDeleteOh, I hadn't thought of an octagonal layout! I like it very much. I ended up making mine just as Cheryl suggested, and I'm happy with it. Haven't posted a picture yet, and I probably won't get it quilted before the project parade, as I'm not quilting it myself. I like your fabric choices!

ReplyDeleteSo glad that you ended up liking it. It took me a long time to take the plunge on mystery quilts for that very reason, the risk of not liking it. But you are right, it can always be given away. So not wasted effort.

ReplyDeleteI think it's great that you made this from scraps and are finishing it your own way! Black binding will make this zing. Love the octagonal shape; it will look so nice as a table topper. I just finished an octagonal flimsy that will become a Christmas tree skirt, but your colors aren't right for that.

ReplyDeleteI agree that picking colors for a mystery quilt can be a challenge. I would rather know what I am making than the guessing. You did well with these colors. I don't know how much of a hint you had as to selecting colors.
