Wild Geese

Are you sewing along with the Quiltville mystery? While my machine is sewing all these blocks, I am singing to myself..."It's the most wonderful time of the year"!
It's so fun making lots of little pieces for blocks that will eventually become a quilt and I have no idea how it will turn out. It's the most fun that a quilter who is somewhat risk-averse can have!
Here are some of my blocks on the design wall ... flying geese are everywhere! Instead of using coral/melon colours for this step, I am using gold/brown paper bag, and loving it!

There are usually so many little pieces to keep track of in a Quiltville mystery and here is my idea to stay organized.
Mystery blocks for step #1 and #2
I reuse a spinach container to store all the block pieces. Everything is exactly where it should be and I can find everything needed as the steps progress. You can see my recycled container with pieces from last year's mystery here and I even found a photo of the same container being used for the 2013 Celtic Solstice mystery here.
Hop over to these link ups: Quiltville step #2 and Sew Fresh Quilts.

  1. I've been tempted to join this year's mystery but I'll wait to see the finished project. You're doing a good job keeping up with posting everyday and your posts are interesting too.

  3. I love your geese! You are absolutely right -- there are a LOT of pieces in these quilts! I am even making a half size quilt and I'm still making piles and piles of units!

  4. Kathy, much like you, I love the game and productivity of a mystery quilt. Last year I made three online MQs. BH’s En Provence, Pat Sloan’s Children’s Library (how could I not as I am a retired teacher librarian) and Confessions of a Fabricholic Santa’s trip. So thankful that I have the time to play with fabric. Happy Quilting!

  5. Love the geese... I have yet to make one! Maybe I can sneak a few in today. I repurposed a 12 inch box to keep track of mine this year. So fun that you have that same container each year - I guess you really do need to get them done each year so you get the container back!

  7. Love the colors! I too am waiting in the wings, but determined to continue my work on MM - NOW, maybe later. My friend Jaydee is doing the quilt and keeping track of her time....... Interesting. I am such the perfectionist that I draw a diagional line on all of the squares..... Yikes 400? I try to eyeball by then it is ripper time. You are doing a great job on yours and your daily posts!

  8. I am enjoying seeing your progress. I have to admit, I wouldn't be humming or singing while making flying geese; they are not a favorite of mine (although I love the look of them). Can't wait to see the next step!

  10. Oh, you crack me up, Kathy!
The thought of doing all those geese at this time of the year does not make me want to sing--more like scream!! LOL
That is why I watch you do mysteries and I plod along with my snail's pace on my usual projects.
    Love your warm colors.

  12. Nice Toasty Browns. Foggy weather makes me want to sing something but it isn't that song... Singing and Stitchin' - go Kathy GO!

  13. I'm making the pieces in the clues but making them for my UFOs instead and still having fun. No spinach containers here, though. I grow my own in the spring/summer and just don't eat it in winter. And besides I'm not that organized. I always have to lose a few pieces so I can find them years later and have some surprise orphan blocks to work with.

  17. Pretty pretty!
Can't wait to see what's next in this mystery. I'm only halfway done with my geese, but I figure I can easily catch up.
