Pinned to the design wall today is a finished quilt! This is my version of Bonnie Hunter's pattern called Grand Illusion. It was her annual mystery quilt that started in November 2014.
The quilting was quick and easy - just a horizontal and vertical grid with the walking foot.
This quilt taught me that I really am a scrappy quilter. I purchased new yardage for this quilt and struggled with it the whole time. I learned that I don't want to sew with new yardage because it just doesn't make my heart sing. Why use one green fabric when 10 or 20 greens will make me happier?!?

Congratulations! I agree, the more fabrics the better. But, I am not opposed to more new fabrics. :D

ReplyDeleteI've come to the same conclusion about myself - the scrappier, the better. It's a nice finish.
ReplyDeleteI was in a quilt shop in Virgil recently and overheard the gal who owns it saying that if you don't love the fabric you're sewing with give it to someone who will. Only sew with what makes you happy. Scraps make me happy!
ReplyDeleteLove your finish. Scrappy certainly makes me happy. I just love the different shades of a colour that can go into a scrappy quilt so why by new yardage when you can have scrappy.

ReplyDeleteI Agree! I often select/buy new fabrics & when I get them ready to cut, something makes me set them aside & use unplanned scraps. I LOVE THEM.

Definitely scrappy is best, though I don't mind "having" to mix in a couple new fabrics! And, I really enjoyed your last two posts about the MCC Quilt Auction, what an amazing time seeing all those quilts sold under one roof, for a wonderful cause.
ReplyDeleteYea, It's Finished! Now you can work on a quilt that you love more. A new month is coming to choose. I made a smaller version of my Grand Illusion. I have more blocks ot do something with. I am playing "Squirrel". Too many other projects push it off the list.

Congrats on the finish. As long as we learn something with each new quilt it is a good experience. I too find I enjoy working with lots of scraps rather than single yardage like I did when I started sewing. Good thing... since I have a wall of fabric and lots of bins of scraps!
ReplyDeleteYour quilt is still beautiful. I tried to do Grand Illusion with a particular line of fabric as well, and had the same epiphany! Now all my fabric is sorted by colour only - no more boring quilts for me.

ReplyDeleteA lovely quilt Kathy. I agree totally about lots of scraps. I'm making a sampler for my mum and using yardage bores me. But she wants pink and white, so thats good enough for me. I enjoy your posts, I read every one. Kathx
