Scrappy piano key strips are on the design wall today. These are going to be borders for the scrap vortex quilt. I am piecing the scraps on wax paper to see if I like this technique. It's keeping the strip sets perfectly even and so far, I'm really liking it. A few more sections are needed to add to the quilt top, but right now it's the perfect mindless piecing job!

Please educate me! Why are you using waxed paper to keep the sections straight? I am unfamiliar with that technique!
ReplyDeleteYes, I am curious about the wax paper as well. Love the strips, will make a really cute borders
ReplyDeleteOoh, you just gave me an idea for something I'm working on! I'm doing a Cal King pineapple log cabin and the blocks are 17 3/4" finished. The way the math works out, I'd like to make it a little bigger but not so much to add another row of blocks, and I didn't want a border that would jump out and detract from the geometric impact of the pineapple blocks. But I will have tons of strips left over when the blocks are done, and maybe a piano key border would do the trick? Love your bright colors, by the way!
ReplyDeleteGreat scrap piano key borders for the vortex quilt. I use paper from old telephone books, and it works fine.

ReplyDeleteI love the look of the piano key border, but I have never had the patience to make one. This is looking good. I'm guessing that with the use of the wax paper, not a lot of "pressing" takes place as you put this together.
ReplyDeleteI'm not familiar with the wax paper idea. Sounds interesting. I enjoy reading your blog every day.
ReplyDeleteI haven't used wax paper often for a foundation but, years ago, I did pick up a roll for paper from the tag end of a newspaper run at our local paper. Lightweight, cheap, and decent size to handle.
ReplyDeletejust finished a piano key border, lot of mindless sewing but looks great
