UFO Orphanage

From time to time a baby gets dropped off on my doorstep. Not a real one... a fabric one! Sometimes the biological creator takes responsibility for the drop off and sometimes it's a "drop and run" situation.
Do you remember this abandoned UFO from a few years ago? It's one of my favourite rescues! Lots of the blocks were already made and I easily figured out how to finish it.

Here's the latest package that was abandoned. It's a golden oldie and the original pattern and/or idea is long gone. Now it's just a pile of fabric in colours that the quilter really wanted to like but just didn't. Some if it is cut, some of it is half sewn. There are many HST blocks sewn and some large squares with flip and sew corners.

It's impossible to know what this was going to become and it's a challenge to know where to even start. I started by trimming all the threads on the sewn blocks and finished sewing the HSTs that were started.
So now what?!?
Any suggestions?

  2. Interesting combo of Block units. You did a great Job on the last one. The sizes don't seem to go together. No clue of what pattern she started with, huh? I'd have to see them all spread out to get a better look at them. Have a great time playing. EQ might be helpful.

  3. I would first finish all the flippy corners provided. Then lay out ALL the pieces to see what you really have to work with and perhaps a pattern will jump out. It's really hard to tell what you have to work with in these pics.

    1. I agree with Elle, it's hard to tell what you have there. Can you take a picture of them all laying out flat?

  4. I agree the HST's need to be spread out to see what possibilities are there.

  6. Can't wait to see what you do with them. More information would be needed regarding sizes to help with an idea!

  7. Just start playing and add some beige.

  8. I say do whatever floats your boat with them, but if they were mine I would add purple. : )

  9. It's fun to follow a good mystery.

  10. Like the others suggested - lay those pieces out and let them speak their mind. Not a purple person, but like Janet's suggestion of adding it to those lovely golds.

  11. Perhaps a sunflower-type block. The colors are right.

  12. It's hard to tell from the photo exactly what the blocks look like but my first thought was to put them around a medallion (but that's because medallion quilts are on my mind because of Humble Quilt's Gwennie-Inspired Medallion Quilt Along). The colors look very subtle and close in both color and value. Perhaps you could mix in some brighter or darker fabric, too...? I'm looking forward to your next post about these.

  13. Beautiful colors, it would make a nice fall quilt, especially if you have some orange and brown to mix in. Though I like the idea of a sunflower block too. Looking forward to seeing this one develop.
