Non Quilting Requests
There are many creative sewing tasks that a quilter is often expected to perform. I detest mending and hemming pants as I may have mentioned several times over the years! But there are also unusual requests that come up from time to time.
Here are a few I have reluctantly completed recently...
*sewing more student badges for my brave sister who is going back to school for her nursing degree
*repairing half eaten toys for irresistible grand dog Max
*sewing chair cushions for the dining room chairs
*making head bands for my daughter's paintballing boyfriend. This is by far the oddest sewing request I have had.
But he had a sample that I could make a pattern from, he purchased all the supplies, and he was so excited about getting new "custom made" head bands, how could I possibly say "no"?!? The ones on the left and the right have the black nylon fabric that hangs down from the head band to keep the sun off the top of his head and his neck. It had to have a sweatband where the forehead is... what a production that was! Never again! Unless of course he loves them :)
*stitching two lines of thread across my Dad's new socks so he will know which of his thousands of black socks go together!
Okay everyone, I'm done with these "non quilting" sewing tasks!
We will now resume our regularly scheduled quilting tasks!
On Sunday I sewed a button on my son-in-law's shorts, and on Monday I sewed a student patch for my daughter who begins her nursing classes and clinicals this week. I don't mend for me or my hubby, but I will for my daughter and her family. Ha!
ReplyDeleteMy hubs is always asking me to fix his torn trousers/shirts etc. i.e. those that need to be binned! I'm a baaaad wife, as I always (not so sweetly) decline. LOL
ReplyDeleteI do the badges for a neighbours son....hubby likes his socks marked( thought he was alone there!)... Lol. Hemming jeans....I just won't do!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteoh I love the socks idea! This was a fun post and I had to laugh because I have a pair of jean shorts that need a pocket repaired and I put that off for over a month, almost forgot about it until I read this. There is also a teddy bear missing a nose due to a certain dog....
ReplyDeleteIs your sister in the Detroit area? That badge looks a lot like the logo for the local community college I attended several years ago. I also get periodic requests for non quilty sewing, sigh, but I usually tell people NO or "It will take me a few months." :) :) :)
ReplyDeleteI have fixed the Velcro on a pair of shoes an elderly relative must wear for a health condition. I have hemmed many pairs of pants and sewn dog toys back together too. These are not my favourite tasks either!
ReplyDeleteI have done the badges on military shirts and really don't care to but couldn't it down. I don't care for sewing that is not quilting related.
ReplyDeleteA couple of times comes to mind....lately someone in my family got a new job. She purchased a few blazers and asked if I could make them into 3/4 sleeves. I advised her to go to a tailor. I didn't want to do it, but truthfully that's probably outside of the scope of my experience! Years ago children's hockey leagues came out with a "stop" patch on the back of the jerseys to cut down on checking from behind. I was asked to help out sewing them on. No problem, something I was glad to do! I did tell them in the future that this kind of thing should be done before the jerseys are worn...cuz what a smell!!!
ReplyDeleteWell I do not what you mean about non-quilt sewing. My husband is always asking me to make pillows for is baskets with names or pictures on them. I do not even take up my own pants, put here come my brother with his, and my daughter bring over things that need to be taken up for my grand-daughter, just wait until she can fit it. Glad I got that off my chest.
ReplyDeleteYes some non quilty stuff comes up and I must say I only do it for the ones I love.I would much rather be doing my stuff.
ReplyDeleteYou are a trooper!
ReplyDeleteOh yes! Hemming! Such a chore! Yuck! The ones I dislike the most are curtains' hemming and DH's "hole in the pocket" requests. I much prefer to sew garments from the beginning than repairing them. A friend brought me a winter boot and asked that I fix the strap. (!??) Maybe they figure that because I like to sit in front of a sewing machine, I will appreciate having the challenge of working with all kind of materials!! lol. I referred her to a shoe repair shop. ;^)
ReplyDeleteFunny you brought up hemming pants as we have had two sewing groups that needed that task done (for themselves) and we put aside quilting for a lesson on hemming.
ReplyDeleteHad to laugh at this--have done so many of these types of things. Don't these people know I just want to quilt?
ReplyDeleteAnd while on vacation in Oregon recently I hemmed a pair of pants and fixed a jacket lapel for my SIL and hemmed a skirt for my daughter. : )
lol.....I had one of those sewing days this week too.
ReplyDeleteI've had quite a few of those requests lately too. Sewing patches on my husband leather vest and more. Sewing in leather is not the easiest. But I got it done and he loves it.
ReplyDeleteNow that was a fascinating list to read! Just proves what a servants heart you have. :)
ReplyDeleteI'm with you on the. I HATE taking up trousers.
ReplyDeleteYep, the relatives think we like doing those things. Hemmed a pair of pants and a dress in Wyoming earlier in the month. Wish I had taken my machine with my blind hem foot.
ReplyDeleteAt our house, it's sewing on buttons. It's like they don't know where the needle and thread is!
