Today I am starting to hand quilt my oldest UFO. This old quilt was pieced in 1996 so it will soon be 20 years old! You can read more about this quilt here.
It's time to start the quilting.
This quilt holds so many memories for me. I always had in mind to hand quilt this project, but somehow it never got to the top of the project pile.

I finally bought a package of my favourite hand quilting batting and a new box of pins. It's a queen size quilt, so I needed to get more pins since they will be committed to this project for a long time.

The pin basting was finished this week and it was a tough workout for my hands, with only one episode of bleeding. The hand quilting will be a breeze compared to the pinning process.
And so the hand quilting journey begins again, although I don't know yet what the quilting design is going to be. Stay tuned :)

ReplyDeleteI love that batting too and started using it after some blogger ( You, perhaps ) recommended it. The last quilt that I quilted used a different one and I am pleased to be using the Dream one for the current project.

There is no link-up! It took me 20 years to hand quilt my first ever quilt. I made the mistake of making a queen-sized quilt as my first quilt. It did grace my bed for several years until one of the fabrics started to break-down. Enjoy your quilting.

ReplyDeleteI know *exactly* what that's like!! The biggest quilt I ever started (and the quilt that really made me persevere as a quilting enthusiast) and my third quilt. I started it in 2007 and finished it this year. Wow, 1996?! That was the year I got married! Your quilt is beautiful and worthy of a finish!

ReplyDeleteIt's so nice to know there are other quilters that have UFO older than a decade waiting patiently to be completed. The quilt you are preparing to hand quilt is just lovely, happy stitching.
ReplyDeleteI went and read you post from 2012 about this quilt and it is great that it has final reached the top of the pile for quilting. Unfortunately if a project doesn't call you it will take ages to finish. I've had trouble finishing a baby quilt because it wasn't what I wanted to make. Although its a gift for a colleague she knew I was making it and gave me information on what she would like. I've realised I love making things for people using my knowledge of them and what they like to guide the colours and design. This way the project gets finished quickly and so far has always been loved when gifted. Your quilt is beautiful and will be fabulous with the hand quilting.

ReplyDeleteNow I know the age of some of the fabric scraps I see at the thrift store from time to time! Better late than never. We wouldn't want all that hard work you've done so far end up some day at a thrift store!

ReplyDeleteWow Kathy, 20 years?! And there's me thinking my 7 was way too many :D It's great how it still looks fresh today and not dated at all (in terms of fabric). The star pattern is wonderful. I hope you have a lot of fun quilting it - and it doesn't take another 20 years!
