Row By Rowing?

Did you get in on the Row By Row experience this summer?
It seemed quite popular around here, and I did see many wonderful quilts posted on the Ontario Rowing Facebook page over the summer. But thankfully I did not catch the bug for that.

However, my friend Barb has a bad case of rowing fever, and I think she has visited every rowing quilt shop from here to Timbukto, and that's a long way from here! She picked me up some souvenirs along the way, including these fabric license plates.  I'm not sure what I will do with these, but I am enjoying seeing them on my design wall for now.

In her summer travels, Barb also collected the 15 packages for the July Shop Hop. Just look at this collection which includes the patterns and fabrics for the quilt blocks. And guess what?
She gave them all to me because she dislikes the colour blue. That's right... doesn't like blue, doesn't wear blue and won't sew with blue.  Have you ever heard of a quilter that doesn't like blue?!?
I am still friends with her anyway! LOL
And it's a good thing because look at the benefits from being her friend! There are 15 blocks in total, which is an odd number to work with, but there are some great layout ideas shown on the Shop Hop Facebook page. I'm thinking this would be a fun project to tackle at Quilt Camp in the middle of winter.

This is my favourite block in the collection. It's from Heart N Home in New Hamburg, and they not only included the fabric and pattern (did I mention the quilt stores gave these kits to the customers for free?!?) but they included the embroidery floss and a needle. Love it!

  1. Your comment made me smile about the colour blue - It's my favourite colour and most of my clothes are blue, my walls are emulsioned blue and I even have lots of blue fabric for sewing - it's always a happy blue day for me :)

  2. I love blue and hardly used to wear any other colour. When it comes to brown though I am going to have trouble with the RSC15 as I only have 3 fabrics in that colour!

  3. My first thought was why didn't she make the blocks just using a different color than blue ... until I read that the shop owners included the fabric as well as the pattern. I can't wait to see you put yours together.

  4. Lucky you! Imagine someone who doesn't like blue =)
I got a few rows but only have one row made so far.

  5. Lucky you....I know you will do something terrific with those blocks! I have a couple license plates too decorating my design wall. You're right not sure what to do with them!!

  6. I did get two rows while in Idaho and one from a quilt shop out side of Yellowstone. I'm hoping to get one from Colorado while here. Lucky you to be the recipient of those 15 blocks. Have fun!

  7. I didn't intentionally do the Row Hop, but did go to our 3 LQS. Unfortunately they all were out of kits and out of the license plates. You have a great friend - yeah, who hates blue in quilting?

  8. I didn't go rowing, but have picked up a license plate or two. Love the Carpe Quiltem.
No blue? Is she also opposed to the sky on clear days? I guess you do benefit from her dislike, so you don't want to convince her otherwise. : )
That is really something that the shops gave away full kits.

  9. This post perfectly intertwines with some scholarly work that I did in college.
What is your friends favorite color?

  10. We stopped at 7 different shops during our travels this summer, and picked up a kits from each for their row. When I'm going to get them made up is an unknown, at this point. But it was fun doing it.

  11. A quilt shop near us was doing the row by row thing. It's interesting, but not really my thing. Love the license plates the most.:) So funny to find a quilter who doesn't like blue! I could not imagine my quilts without any blue!

  12. I only got a little bit of the RxR in Florida. My plan is to complete my rows during the holiday break. I have plenty of other projects to play with now :)

  13. Oh, I missed 7 of the shops. Could I maybe borrow the patterns sometime?

  14. I caught the BUG for Row by Row. I have collected way more patterns than I will ever use. But I really like the License plates and what they say the most. I want to make a car quilt with them somehow. I just haven't figured it all out. No time to play right now. I had friends collect for me too.

  15. I was in a local shop today and a carful of ladies came in for the row by row kit. Looks like a fun game to play!
Raising my hand as an infrequent user of blue! I don't like it for decor but of course fabric is something else :)

  16. Fun license plates. What a good friend to pass on what she doesn't like.
