Mash or Sash?

*blink*
Where did that week go?
I got lost in the vortex of life and scraps, trying to make everything fit together into a cohesive whole. It's a lot like building a giant jigsaw puzzle... trying to make something out of a big pile of leftover bits and pieces. But progress has been made on my vortex quilt (lessons are here).
So now the question is... should I mash the mess all together in a true vortex?

Or should I try to bring some order to the chaos and put in some sashing?
What is your vote - mash or sash?!?

Tonight is Friday Night Sew In. Have you signed up? I hope to spend a quiet night hand stitching and resting up for a Row by Row adventure with my friend Barb on Saturday. I'm not participating in the rowing since I already have so much on the go, but Barb is, so I'm driving her around to wherever she wants to go. And you never know where that might be!

  1. I vote for sashing :) your vortex quilt looks really big! Did you use up all your scraps?

I love your blog and always look forward to seeing your progressing projects.

  2. I would sash if it makes the quilt big enough for you. If it's already BIG enough - no sashing.
I know what you mean about the week flying by. I had a lot od meeting that took my Quilting Time away. Have fun Rowing. I did my Row by Row and won a prize. I'm glad it's DONE. That took Quilting time away from me too. Here's to a few days at home before the chaos of the Fair starts.

  4. I would mash it together then slice it diagonally and add sashing on the diagaonals :)

  10. Sash. It give a break to the eyes.

  11. If you're going to sash you have to put in some vertical bits too to create pathways; otherwise, the sashing looks out of place like trying to conform something meant to be wild. Vertical sashing added to the horizontal sashing done randomly would create rest stops for the eye but still have some of the madness of the vortex piecing.

  12. Time flies...when you do improv piecing! How 'bout cutting your top into the biggest square possible and setting it on point with four huge HST's in the corners. Cut the remaining vortex "fabric" into four squares, as large as possible. Use those squares as cornerstones in a border around your large square in a square. Shop your stash for those huge HST's and your border fabric = even more stash busted! Keep on quiltin'. Cwoosley12@yahoo.com

  15. I love it mashed together -- very fun and lots of energy. But if you do want to do sashing, I agree with comment number 19, to do put in vertical sashing as well as horizontal. sarah@forrussia.org

  17. I'm such a fan of the sash. I get the whole vertex idea, resting spots are such a nice break for the eyes.

  18. The mash is very fun, but I find my eyes flit away from something if there is nowhere for them to rest. If it was mine I would sash, but it isn't mine, so my opinion doesn't matter. : )

  21. Hmmm - I'm thinking that style of piecing calls for mashing! Or maybe add in a little sashing here and there, like a surprise, just a short strip here and a shot of something there? It would give the eye some prompt to move around the quilt :) Love the happy scrappiness of it!!!

  23. I like MASH but you know....maybe a sash horizontally might not be too bad!!! Enjoy being the chauffeur, I am sure she won't make you sit in the car...you'll get to go into the stores too!!!
