Grand Illusion blocks are on the design wall! There is one test block on the wall that has a green centre which I plan to change so it matches all the other blocks.I made half of the blocks for this mystery quilt. Although I also made half of the suggested number of sashing blocks, I decided I don't like the sashing in between. So I'm just going to go ahead and sew these together. The sashing blocks will then either become one of the borders, or they might become part of the backing.

ReplyDeleteblocks look great, but I agree it was the sashing that threw the whole thing off and why people don't like theirs (the ones that kept the color choices) how about you do a plain sashing?

ReplyDeleteI agree with everyone about the sashing -- the end result just looks like confetti scattered about. The block, itself, is not bad and those I've seen with plain sashing look nice. But I also like the look of yours with no sashing. I am so glad I didn't get very far on the sashing clue!
ReplyDeleteGreat layout. I am omitting the sashing as well and using it for a border. I just have not yet decided how to lay it out. I really like yours though.
ReplyDeleteExcellent decision ..... Joe Tulips sashed hers with a calm neutral and it worked well. Your layout sans any sashing is also great .... Much better than the final reveal's look.

ReplyDeleteI really like how you've put your Grand Illusion together. I must admit that I fizzled at the end. I'm not sure what it was about the quilt but I just haven't felt like finishing it up.

ReplyDeleteI read a lot of blogs where people made this quilt top and ended up hating it, said it was the first mystery by Bonnie they didn't like and I must admit even though I didn't make it I was glad I hadn't as I didn't like it either - I much prefer your version without the sashing!!

ReplyDeleteI like the secondary pattern made by putting this one together withou the sashings. Good idea to use those in your border. I've considered the same idea. Still stitching the last 13 blocks I had stacked up last Monday.

I agree with so many others about this years mystery. I'm glad I hadn't started it after seeing the reveal. Didn't like it at all. But I LOVE yours! Perfect fabric choices.

ReplyDeleteI felt the same about the original sashing but decided to use white tone on tone for the sashing. I may use the original blocks as a border or in the back, or maybe another project. I like the way your version is coming along.
