I have finally finished sewing the alternate blocks for the Marcus Fabrics sew-along. They should have been easy blocks but I kept making cutting errors, which made sewing the blocks together much harder than it needed to be. The problem was that some of the pieces are 2" and some are 2.5", and I repeatedly forgot which was which!
And here on the design wall is the recommended layout with the blocks on point. I'll definitely be moving the blocks around to balance the greens and red a bit more.
What do you think?
I think it's not terrible, but it won't be my favorite quilt.
The next step will be to decide which colours to use for the setting triangles and borders.

I have done these blocks in purple and green. I have added them to other blocks that I made years ago.

I hope to get it finished soon.
Good on you for finishing them
Your sampler blocks are beautiful.
ReplyDeleteI was having the same problem with the 2" and 2.5" cuts. Mine is done, quilted and sitting on my fav recliner to cuddle up in. At first I was going to give it away but decided to keep it!!
ReplyDeleteI mess up cutting sometimes too - easy to do - love those blocks - they really add color don't they
ReplyDeleteI too mess up with cutting at times especially if the citing is close to the same size. I do like your quilt.
ReplyDeleteI like it! I love the 'chain' that the dark squares make.
ReplyDeleteI didn't think I was going to make the chain blocks because I don't have enough background fabric but I like that you went scrappy. I say keep going with it. If in the end you don't like it, some one else will be thrilled with it.
ReplyDeleteI like it, at least if you don't like it you can always give it away as a gift to someone you know will like it!
ReplyDeleteI went with one fabric in the chain blocks, but I like your scrappy. Mine is off to the long armer and should be back on Thursday - binding is waiting.
ReplyDeleteYour blocks are great. Love the colors.
ReplyDeleteI'm curious what you don't like about it. Looks great to me! Chain blocks always add so much as setting squares, IMHO.
ReplyDeleteI was getting ready to type something similar to Janet's comment (and then I read hers). My eye moved nicely around the quilt, so I thought the color placement was good! It's a lovely quilt, that's for certain! It's amazing how a simple block, set on point, can transform a quilt! :)
ReplyDeleteI like it!
ReplyDeleteI like the chain blocks. So sorry you had a lot of mis-cuts. Glow tape on the ruler helps me when I'm cutting those strips. A tally mark and strip size on a scrap of paper also helps keep my strips in order. I think once you add that POP of setting triangles you could fall in love with this quilt again.
ReplyDeleteI think it looks wonderful! Glad you stuck with it.
ReplyDeleteI love the how the sampler blocks look between the chain blocks. Very stunning!
ReplyDeleteI think your quilt is beautiful! Glad you didn't give up with the frustration of those similar-sized squares!
ReplyDeleteI really like the sampler blocks and the way the chain sets them off. I suggest some of the colors from the samplers for the border triangles. Like the oranges.
ReplyDeleteThe scrappy alternate blocks look so good. I love it. Great work Kathy. Enjoy the auditioning for the setting triangles fabric. I have some olive green fabric for you if you'd want it. :D
ReplyDeleteWell of course it's not terrible! I think it is a wonderfully warm and inviting quilt. One day, you will find its forever home - the perfect place that was planned for it before you even knew it was needed :*)
ReplyDeletelooks good to me with your colour choice, yes i too have problems cutting and getting confused!
ReplyDeleteI think your blocks look great. It's easy to get frustrated when the blocks don't go together easily. I hope it grows on you. I am assembling my rows now so hopefully I will have an update by next Monday's design wall.
ReplyDeleteI love the setting with the mix of the sampler blocks and the cornerstone blocks...great combo!!
ReplyDeleteI love your header photo! The quilt and the leaves complement each other so well.
ReplyDeleteCongrats on getting all the blocks done. It looks great, even if it's not going to be a favorite.
