Slow Sunday Stitching

From Seven Cherubs

There was very little slow activity of any kind at my house this week, especially stitching. Everything everywhere seems to be in overdrive the week before Christmas. People are stressed, they drive crazier, sleep less, drink more, party more, and shop more. I don't like it!
I need to quilt more and breathe more!

I put the binding on "Up, Up, and Away" (aka the Accidental Quilt) last week and then remembered that I had wanted to quilt some stitches at the end of each row. So I have been doing a bit of that this week to de-stress.

And today I intend to do a lot of it!

I am loving the new thimble I bought.
Who could resist a product called a "Fingerhut mit"?!
It has lots of ridges and dimples to catch the needle. You might think the quality of my stitching would improve with my new fingerhut mit, but not so far! That's okay.
I am loving how it looks no matter the size or inconsistency of stitches. I think I have converted myself to using coloured threads for quilting. No more white or neutrals for me. I want to see all those stitches I took!
What are you hand stitching today?
Share your project with us in the links below and your name will go in the draw for this applique pattern. I bought it a long time ago and I know I will never make it, so I am passing it on to a fellow slow stitcher.
I want to wish all my Slow Stitching friends a very Merry Christmas!

  2. I think you need lots of stitch therapy today. Hope you get a chance to slow stitch. Your quilt looks wonderful with all those lovely stitches. I get to make and sew the binding down on the apple quilt after a few fixes to a couple of apples. So exciting! I'll have to do my post a bit later this morning.

  3. It does look cute with the colored thread and what I get a kick out of is that I have some of those same fabrics that are in your picture : )

    Have a Merry Christmas!

  5. Colored thread is great! I'm a crummy hand quilter, but when the quilt is all assembled and washed and crinkled, the hand stitching looks just fine. Not a gazillion sts to the inch, but cute and fun and manageable.

  6. I finished hand stitching the binding on this precious quilt yesterday. It was such an honour to make this quilt!

I love the idea of hand quilting with coloured thread and my next Seven Sisters quilt will be done with blue. I can't wait to get started!

  7. I agree about colored thread. Even when working on a traditional quilt with neutral background, I always go a few shade darker with my thread. I think your stitches are wonderful, don't be too self critical, all quilters are too self critical. I try to remember why I love quilts, it is usually cause the are unique and I love the little imperfections that hand quilting adds. Merry Christmas Kathy!

  10. I have been following your blog for over a year now and have been inspired to do some slow stitching myself. I am working on some cute flower embroideries that I bought when I was sixteen. I plan to write a blog about just these embroideries and link up with you. Thanks for sharing all that you do each day.

  12. I've tried almost every different type of thimble there is and can't get used to any of them, darn it! I even have one like your Fingerhut mit but it must have been called something else because I didn't get it from Fingerhut!

I think any hand stitching is gorgeous and I think it should be in a different color so all that hard work shows! Gorgeous quilt, BTW.

  13. I work best with the Nimble Thimble, but since I'm a side pusher, those thimbles don't hold up too well. I discovered the side pusher thimble from Colonial Needle ... there are no quilt shops locally that carry them (there aren't many quilt shops locally and the few that there are carry very little in the way of hand quilting supplies). I tried to order one from the Colonial Needle website, but after fighting with them to sell me one, I finally told them thanks but no thanks. Guess I'll just keep using (and replacing periodically) my Nimble Thimble. ;-)

I love using colored thread ... that's one of the reasons I like Gutermann thread ... it comes in so many different colors. Your hand quilting is simply delightful!

  14. Merry Christmas to you too Kathy! I don't have anything to link up today - my latest projects are top secret Santa gifts :*) I just wanted to say I've thoroughly enjoyed Slow Stitching with you this year and look forward to more in 2014!

  15. Kathy...I feel so happy tonight having found your wonderful blog and meme. I love my hand stitching and my embroidery, and cross-stitch so it looks like I will fit right in with the rest of you. I quilted for 25 years and then started knitting and cross stitching. Now I have returned to my roots in quilting. When I started there was no such concept as machine stitching or precut jelly rolls. I have had a hard time learning all of the new jargon, but I have not learned the free motion quilting and some of the other things. I like it the way I always did it. Hope to see you again real soon. Merry Christmas. genie

  17. good to see what everyone is doing. i have a thimble like yours think they call them quilters thimbles here but cannot seem to keep it on my finger, wish they made them longer, think a leather one will be my next purchase.

  18. Your hand quilting in colored thread is very fun. I may get that brave someday. : )
That is the same style thimble I use. I've always wondered how people could quilt with a thimble that didn't have those ridges. They are a necessity for me!!
