Quilt Label

I finished my version of Bonnie Hunter's Orca Bay mystery last month. But a quilt isn't really finished until it has a label, right?!?

Inspired by a beautiful label I saw on the Votes For Women blog using selvages, I made a label with some of my quilt's fabric selvages. I just took a piece of fabric, sewed selvages on all 4 sides, turned the edges under and appliqued it to the quilt back.

Here you can see the scrappy backing I made for this quilt using up the leftover blocks and fabrics. And the new label in the corner announces that the quilt is now truly finished!
So now I can mark is down on the UFO list on my right side bar as DONE!

  1. Thanks for reminding me Kathy. I sometimes add my label before quilting and quilt it right on. I haven't even thought about the label for Christmas Journey.I guess that will be my project today.

  2. I love that idea for a label - it looks like it belongs on the quilt. I usually use a piece of white cotton in the corner on the back and it always sticks out like a sore thumb!

  5. Glad you are feeling good enough to sew! Love the fabric selvages (some are really cool on the fabrics I use... like yours are for your project :)..) and dread throwing them away but never leave enough to see the fabric pattern on most of mine so I don't keep them... next quilt this may work... I typically embroider my name and the date on an edge... but I like yours better... just using a fabric marker?? I tried a permanent black fine point Micron and it bled into the fabric and made a mess.. will add as a patch when I try writing in the future :) Kathi

  9. Cute new festive header photo. : )
I love the selvedge idea to record the fabrics in the quilt. My problem is that I am so addicted to the quick and easy triangle labels that go on with the binding. I wonder if I could work the selvedges into that somehow?
Congrats on your "truly finished" finish!!

  11. Saw that selvedge quilt label on Grandmother's Choice as well - thought it was a nifty idea - nice to see another execution - what a great way to reinforce the memories from the quilt!

  12. What a clever idea for your label. I agree though it's not done until the label is sewn in place. Well done!

  16. I need to put a label on my latest finish--seems the quilts I keep don't get labels. The selvage idea is cute!
